Brake Upgrade - where do I start?
#1
My UK94 Turbo has totally standard brakes. I would like to improve them but amidst all the talk of pads, calipers, pots and hoses I want to get good value out of whatever I spend. Come on all your experts, where should I start?

we are in the same boat as yourself at the moment m8
they are the standerd single pots arent they
we wanted to put a p 6 pots on ours but that meant we had to upgrade from 16 inch wheels to 17 inch wheels cost roughly £1100
but what i have decided to do now is go for the brembo 4 pot set up which enables me keep the 16 inch wheels
the best price i have seen recently was from dr motorsport roughly £900,have now been out in a evo6 with the same type of brakes and was well impressed :
hope this is of some use to you

guys,
why not look for a set of second had 4 pot calipers, with new discs, grpN and pads ferrodo ds2000 or pagid blues, dot5 or racing fluid and braided lines, should be way cheaper than new brembos, but probably not just as good. An awful lot better than 2 pots.

OK but I'm on a budget here! I would like to proceed a stage at a time if possible and appreciate the money I've spent each time! I'm confused about 4 pot calipers, do I need to get different discs and pads if I go for these. They seem to come up for sale regularly but I have no idea what else I would need if I bought them!

Hello again
Already thought about second hand sti 4 pot brakes and calipers, prices were varying from £300-£400 that includes pads, discs, and calipers possible hoses.
Would mind paying that price but i would rather put it towards a set of brembo 4 pots.
- yes you would have to change your discs because they are larger diameter than standard ones.

Chris, are you going to do track days or not? If not, cheapest way is to pick up some 4-pot calipers from the For Sale section (I'll flog you mine if you like!). Then get upgraded discs, pads and 5.1 fluid.
Quite a few people say good things about the EBC disc with Green Stuff pads, but I've not tried them. About £250 I think, which is very good (call Tyres Northampton). If you can afford it, go for Prodrive uprated discs and pads (Ferodo DS2000). Around £500, but guaranteed good.
If you're going on track and want to enjoy yourself, go straight for a Prodrive, AP Racing or Brembo upgrade. £1,500? Big money but BIG brakes. When heading into the Donington Esses at 120-plus, it's kind of reassuring to know that your brakes are not going to give up on you. I learned that lesson the hard (expensive) way.

PS You'll need MY99/00 16in wheels to clear the 4-pot calipers (I've got some of those, too!)

Already fitted MY00 16" wheels so that is not a problem. Not too worried about track days so the s/h 4 pot route sounds like the place to start. If I'm reading correctly I need to change discs and pads at the same time?

Chris, yes. A properly set up brake set up is a complete system, with each component matched. eg low grade pads with quality discs will get you nowhere; uprated pads with low grade discs will bu99er the discs.
Key componets are pads, discs, fluid, hoses etc - probably in that order, but much better to do them all together.

See if you can get hold of Jonathon Rigby. He may still have his original P1 disks, Pads & Calipers and might be willing to sell them.
I beleive they'll fit straight on.

Chris, yes I've got the standard four-pot calipers off my UK00, a decent set of standard pads and a nearly knackered set of Prodrive Ferodo DS2000 pads (not much life left in them, but worth trying to see the difference).
I was going to keep them for when I change cars, but that's a long way off. £200 and they're yours.

Just like to add my twopeneth,
Recently added new group N discs and ferrodo ds2000 pads to a set of second hand 4 pots onto my MY95. Difference from std 2 pots is amazing!!! Okay, for serious track use you would have to go for AP Racing or Bembos, but as a cheap option the new discs & pads do the business. I can now STAMP on the brakes from 100 mph and the ABS will be cutting in all the way until stationary. Without ABS it would mean you could lock the wheels at 100mph!
Recommended.
Andy
PS. Thanks for TSL in Nottingham for fitting them - they really came in handy at Donnington Park!

I had a similar setup, and my last track day ran out a set of rear pads in half a day. Do you not find your rears overheat now you've sorted the fronts ?
What rear pads were you running ?
(Have now gone to a vented rear so hopefully it won't happen again, but still interested in the rear pads)

Hello,
I have a car similar age to yours.
I have had powerstation Fit some Tar-OX sport Japan Discs (Drilled and Grooved) and Some tar ox Pads, becasue the originals were worn out.
Discs 199+vat Pads =79+vat. I also had bumpsteer £100.
The Brakes are much better than before so you could try this simple upgrade before you go for the calipers. There is also a bracket that goes on the bulhead to prevent flex from the master cyliner that is supposed to work OK.

Gary,
my pants started to overheat before my rear pads!!! Seriously though, my Toyo's went off way before my brakes did - they are now sporting a very trendy asymetric profile to them!!
At the mo I'm just running std rear brakes. I don't think they're doing a great deal since they don't seem to have worn at all... maybe I should investigate this a bit further...
