Stupid question about brake upgrades?
#2
your right ! it is a stupid question.
the rear brakes don't need to be any better or you will be locking the rear wheels and be sent spinning.
a pad upgrade should be more than enough.

Doh ! things have changed since my last car, that'll teach me to answer questions before I've looked at the rears properly (I was only replacing the disks on Saturday would you believe !)
I didn't think to check whether the mounting points were the same for the rear calliper as the front, may do that as I have a complete set of callipers in a box now. Sounds unlikely though, would be nice to have larger rear disks though.
Does the P1 have the STI 2 Pot rear calliper ?

You can't do it as you need a parking brake (hand brake) which is operated independently from the normal brakes (ie a cable not hydraulic). The front calipers obviously don't have this attachment.
Ps I don't think it's a silly question, and I am surprised people don't get probs with the rears, I upgraded from MY98 to MY99 Four pots on the front and proceeded to cook a set of new rear pads in half a track day (now have the vented rear + new calliper).
So it's not unfeasable that another front upgrade would not cause the rears to start overheating again.

Gary,
The handbrake works via a cable pulling on brake shoes in a drum which is actually part of the rear disk unit. Changing the calipers at the rear will not affect this operation as the cable operated handbrake is completely seperated from the hydraulic brake calipers.

The 4 pot calliper will not fit on the rear
+ When you stamp on the brakes at high speed - 90% of the braking is done by the front brakes due to the weight being transfered to the front of the car.
If you upgrade the rears 'too' much then your ABS will kick in sooner as the rear is light and therefore easier to lock up the rear wheels with bigger brakes (...well engage ABS anyway)
Rich.
