ProDrive/Alcon 330mm Brake Upgrade - UK Spec car
#1
I was thinking of putting the aforementioned brake upgrade on my UK MY00 car.
Althought tbis sounds silly, a friend mentioned that these kind of large brakes needed a lot of 'warming up' prior to them working properly, and said when cold they make 'squeaking noises'
Is this true ? or just crap ?
I know they're big and powerful brakes, but are they designed for track / competition use, rather than seamless use on public roads?

Darren,
You will NOT regret this upgrade. The brakes now match the performance of the car, they really are that good! I can now push on and brake late into roundabouts/bends etc with the confidence that i'm going to slow down every time without my foot starting to extend to the floor.
Although i've found them to give better performance after a little bit of warming up. When cold they still easily out-perform the std brakes!
Because of there very progresive feel, the initial feel is that they don't feel powerful.
Steve.

Thanks for the commentd lads...
Stevie - you've allayed one fear of mine in that even when cold they do a better job than the std brakes.
Have you known of these brakes squealing at all on anyone else's car ?

This 'drone' you mention bothers me...
I think I'm going to have to test drive a car with them in.
Does the P1 use these brakes ? My local dealer probably has one I can test drive.

I have these brakes on my MY98 and totally agree with everything Alastair says. Bed them in properly (you should get instructions with them) and you'll find that they're worth every penny. Mine saved me on Sunday when an old **** pulled out in front of me when I was driving 'briskly' along one of our superb back roads - I know for a fact that the standard brakes would not have stopped me in time. (isn't the ABS harsh when it cuts in )

The P1 doesn't have them as standard, but it is a very common option for owners. At my delears, all the P1s (total of 2 ) had them fitted from delivery.
They work just fine from cold, as Steve says, very progressive, and as they warm they just seem to get better and better...
When I was first bedding mine in, I got the impression of "good, but not quite outstanding" - now, the stopping power is just frightening!
Don't get any squealing or other noises, and dust seems no worse than my old car (MY97,2pots).

For the first stop, there will be very little difference in distances between these and standard brakes, if both equipped with the same pads. Running brake conversions like Alcon, AP, etc simply allows you to stop hard and fast on a more regular basis without affecting braking performance, and therefore pretty much essential for track users.
Whether they squeal and need warming up depends on what pad type you are using, not on the calipers.
Fitting them on a road-only car certainly won't hurt if you can spare the cash, but I would say it's more for looks as it takes some serious abuse to get standard brakes with decent pads to fade on the road.
I could think of better ways to spend £1500+ anyway.

Apologies if this is slightly away from the point, but does this fit with 16" wheels or is there another Prodrive/Alcon package that does ? Dont want to spend that much on a 4 pot AP system at the moment.

The Prodrive/Alcon £1500 jobbie needs 17" tyres.
The AP 4 pot upgrade as sold by Scoobymania and other fits under 16"
Or there are many many disc and pad upgrades that keep your existing callipers, inc a Prodrive slotted disc + pads for £500 (which I have).

Steff,
Have to disagree - I think the standard Subaru brakes don't feel that impressive.
I'll have to think about it a little. £1,500 is a lot of money. I've already put on PPP+Scoobysport exhaust, ProDrive handling pack, 17" wheels - I must be mad to spend another £1500 on brakes.
I should've just bought an STi car - they have most of that stuff anyway don't they ?
I seem to have gotten 'the bug' to add more and more to my Scoob. Never done this with any of my other cars!

Stef,
There is absolutely no way to compare std brakes with this upgrade, cold or hot. Perhaps AP's are not as good as Alcon when cold?
Increased Diam of the discs gives better stopping power.
Darren,
The droning is not a handicap.
All STI's IMHO are seriously under braked.!
IMHO, before you start thinking of more power for your Scoob you should first make it stop effectively and second make it handle better.

totally agreed, but I've got all the power I need from PPP and ScoobySport full exhaust and I've got the ProDrive handling pack on it too.
Next logical step seems brakes and the Alcon ProDrive kit sounds the hounds rounds.

I have the Prodrive brakes on my P1 - they are fab! Don't need warming up as far as I've noticed and are so powerful they could stop a train (progressively as well!)
Mine do squeal like a ******* though. I live in Milton Keynes, so they do get a lot more use than average. The squealing does not bother me - probably becuase I know race car brakes squeal too.
Regards
Kurt
Hey, that's clever. I type ******* and the system replaces it with *******. I guess you'll never know what they squeal like!

Trigger,
They feel fine to me, not tried the AP or Prodrive full monty, so can't compare to them.
Have done 3 track days. After the 1st I got shudder when braking, pads + discs swopped under warranty and touch wood no problems.
cheers,
Greg
