It does sound like the ABS kicking in.
It could be:
Worn suspension/shocks - not keeping the tyres in contact with the blackstuff
faulty ABS sensor/system - cutting in too soon?
Unusually high tyre pressures - like rock solid!
faulty pads - i had the 'material' seperate from the backing on a Vectra (no suprise there!) - ABS got a bit confused as the pad moved about
could be i am talking b*ll*cks

Hi all, got a query I hope someone can help me with...
On my 96 WRX when I brake I sometimes hear what sounds like a spring twanging from the brakes (think back when you was back at school and you twanged your ruler against the desk and you've got the idea). Underfoot, the brake pedal feels juddery as if the ABS is kicking in. This only ever happens at very low speed, under 10mph, and is most pronouced if I run over a speed bump or drive over a kerb whilst braking.
The ABS does work and I have have no problem braking at speed. For info, new pads and disks (front) were fitted a couple of months ago when I bought the car.
Any ideas?

The car has only done 18k! I would expect shocks/suspension to last longer. It handles very well indeed - I would be suprised if they were at fault. Tyres pressures are fine.
I agree with the your faulty sensor line - I'll have to get it checked out.
I think the brakes are pants anyway and I'm looking at upgrading.
Thanks for the help!

This sounds very like the problem I described in my post of 29th September ("ABS Problem"). My theory too is one of the sensors.
Please keep us posted as to the cause of the problem and I will do the same when I take my car to the garage next week.
Regards,
Robert.
