How low do you run your pads?

Question

My MY00 pads are now down to approx 4mm from what appeared to be closer to 10mm on delivery. I plan to fit uprated pads when I get round to changing them and as I'll have to visit my dealer soon anyway, I may just do it 'early'.

The question remains though: How low can you go before the performance drops off?

Obviously I'm not going to wait until it's metal against metal.

Cheers,
Stephen

Maybe teaching my granny to suck eggs here so do not take offence.

the lower your pads get the less heat dissapation you get - pads/disks/fluid heat up quicker - reduced breaking effect - poss warped disks.

Incidentally, my disks warped @ 17k on my MY99 car - pads down to 2-3mm - disks replaced under warranty minnd you.

crappy grammar and readability but you get the gist.

Thumbs up

Thanks Paul, I hadn't thought about 'heat dissapation' before but I agree that it could easily be a factor.

Denz, I've done 8k - including 350 track* miles so far.

I guess pad-life is like tyre-life. You can kill a set in a day on the track if you're after maximum performance but, if you've got a standard set-up, you run the risk of boiling your fluid and warping your disks first.

Cheers,

*As I still have the original brake hoses and fluid, I've chosen not to push them too hard on the track. Maybe next time......

Stephen,
Have MY00 first set of pads lasted 7500 miles, second set wore out at about 14000 so now fitted MIntex road race pads and braided brake hoses and dot 5.1 fluid.(No track days so far in this car-until Brands)

Difference is vast , much less fade due to greater heat disipation and greater feel through the pedal.

The total cost was just under £100 well worth the money especialy when you consider the price of main dealer pads.
