I'm kinda fond of my gold sti 5 wheels and want to retain them (had a bad experience with 17in wheels on my golf vr6 - put me right off)

Can someone recommend what tyre sizes i can go to on these wheels and what's the verdict for best tyre (am leaning towards s02 at the mo).

Thumbs up

I would not recommend any other size but 205/55. A 215 would fit but you would gain no perceptible grip and the handling would be soggy due to sidewall flexure (rolling of the tyre on thinner rims).

The SO-2 PP's seem the most popular choice, but some users have criticised the softer construction for giving less dry feel, despite good wet grip.

I can vouch for the Toyo T1-S on the Type R: turn-in is now very sharp after 1,000 miles (they have improved tremendously from new) and the grip and progressive feel is so much better - the car seems totally different from when it had the original RE010's. I believe this may be partly due to the stiffer walls on this tyre.

Hope this helps. It's a personal view only.

I did have toyo's on the vr6 funnily enough (complete with momo arrows that were a nightmare !)

and the stiffer sidewalls of the toyo's helped me think it would stop the missus kerbing the car extra bit of security.

Wink

After experiencing a blow out whilst exiting the M1 and having to drive 30 miles with the small T Type spare wheel I decided to replace both back tyres and have them swapped with the fronts. I phoned around and nobody could source Toyo or So2's that day, the earlist was Tuesday. I need the car back for Monday and decided to opt of 2 Pirrelli PZero Asymetrico's (205/50 R16) which I have to say are very good in the dry. I have yet to experience them in the wet.

Phoned my dealer about this "you cannot replace 1 tyre you need to replace all 4" statement and they just laughed and said it was absolute rubbish, I could if I wanted to replace a single tyre and leave the other 3 on the car, providing the replacement was the same make as the remaining tyres.

Aaron

There must be no more than 2mm tread difference over any of the tyres. It buggers up the AWD stuff.
