sti 7/8 brake squeal mod
phoned subaru customer services on wednesday to complain about persistent front brake squeal when reversing.dealer was not bothering or comunicating about fault,so felt it necessary to contact cust.services. helpful chap there informed me that a modification kit, consisting of shims basically, should eradicate the fault.to my surprise this mod. has been out since 2002!!!! why didn,t the dealer know about this??? surely they must get bulletins about upgrades/mods.anyway,customer services were going to inform dealer about this mod & hopefully i,ll get it sorted. if anyone else has brake squeal fault, get onto your dealer & kick ***!!!!!

Sorry to dissillusion you guys, but I had the shim kit fitted last year and it made no difference! (STi7)
At least my dealer (Holdcrofts) khew all about it and suggested it to me. Top marks to Mark Green service manager again.

Its my guess that the shims only stop the "knocking" sound when the pads re-sit when you reverse. Almost all big brakes squeal when used lightly, situation worsens with aftermarket pads. My pagids and now Project-Miu pads on the STI7 Brembos sound like a truck when stopping slowly. When used a bit harder they are noiseless.
I have learnt to live with it. I guess low noise is not a deisgn factor of high priority.

Upgraded the pads to Mintex 1155 last Summer, and they've never done it again.
