Default Steering feel (lack of) - any solutions?

Bought an '01 WRX last year and now I'm fully used to it, I'm not impressed with the vague steering feel one bit. I think it ruins the car - it's so hard to feel what the front wheels are doing and is a big let down since the rest of the car is great (well, a bit slow , but apart from that...).

I've got TSL geometry set up, and am running Toyos on 18" rims.

Is the vagueness down the power steering system? If so, can anything be tweaked to make it better. Anyone found other tyres better than the Toyos?
