I've got a set of 17 inch gold wheels which I'd like painted gun-metal gray. Does anyone know of any specialists who do this sort of thing - preferably in the Yorks area..

Also, what is the technique? Do they just spray paint the wheels or is it more complex than that?

cheers
Tony

I'm in the process of getting my wheels refurbed and painted gunmetal grey (or shadow chrome) as the company calls it. Its not as simple as just painting the wheels unfortunatly but I suppose it depends what condition they are in. First I believe they dip the wheels in an acid like bath to remove lacquer, paint and corrosion. Then they sand blast, run a diamond tipped piece around the rim to remove kerbing marks. Then prime, sand, paint and lacquer in your desired colour. I am in Essex ( sorry nowhere near you) and am having mine done at Rochford Tyres for £55 per wheel. Hope this helps.

Mate of mine had is wheels refurbed and painted grey at Scoobyclinic in Chesterfield. Had them painted rather than powder coated as range of colour to chose from better. Not sure what he paid though but they don't rob you.

Scoobyclinic did an excellent job (top scooby specialist full stop - Kev 'The Gaffer' knows his stuff and very friendly bunch of lads. Keep up the good work.)

pudders,

rochford tyres charged me 55 plus vat some time ago and although the job was good,m it wasn't great as they cannot get out the pitting that you get in older alloys.

I know of a mobile guy who operates in and around essex for £20 a rim cash if you are interested.

Powder coating is a more resilient finish to spray and laquer. Shouldn't be any more expensive and they can more or less match the gunmetal. I found out about this after having mine sprayed.
