I can get the Toyos slightly cheaper than the Eagles (Toyos -72 each, exc. fitting & balancing; GSD3s - 86 each fitted/balanced).
I have GSD2s, and I like them, but have heard that the GSD3s have dodgy sidewalls.
What should I get?

Well I had GSD3's on and they were miles better than the Michelen Pilots the car came with. Got Toyos on just now and pretty much the same as GSD3 in dry but in wet they dont seem as good. Car slides about alot more and don't inspire confidence as the Goodyears did. Goodyears will be going back on when I wear out the Toyos, even if they do cost a bit more.
All in my opinion of course.

If you do a search, you will find that Toyo's are rated v.high, but Goodyears allways come out as the best.
Ive changed to Goodyear F1's on my past 2 cars(Scoob and M3EVO)and i cant rate them high enough.
If you do get them to break loose, they do so very progressively(even on the M3!).
Needless to say,i will be changing to F1's when the current tyres on my new(ish) Scoob get lower

Just got some Toyos on new 17's since I couldn't get any F1s for love nor money. Heard they were v similar from all my research. However F1s are much better in the wet particularly at this time of year (Last tyres were F1 16's btw). Would have waited for F1s with hindsight......

Thanks for the replies.
Has anyone got any comments on this 'weak sidewall' issue on the GSD3s?
Like I say, if they are anything like the GSD2s, then they are fine by me, I have found them pretty faultless, and decent in the wet, which I am most concerned about (you need to be a bit of a **** to lose it in the dry )

If your talking about the splitting sidewalls, Goodyear replaced my set FOC, after a bit of arm-twisting from Elite (suppliers).
Goodyear Tech. dept confirmed that 215/40R17 where an appropriate fitment for the scooby.........

Well the GSD3s are on
less than £350 for 4 x 205/50/16s fitted/balanced.
Asked them about the sidewalls - they said they may have 1 less ply, but the compound was the main difference between the 2s and 3s. They also said they had had no adverse reports on the 3s yet.
As an aside, I was chatting to them about a group buy, and if I bought 10 sets (40 tyres) of that size, I could get them for £75 each!

Iv'e just put a set of YOKAHOMA AVS sports on £290 all in fitted, i was going to spend extra on the goodyears as i thought they were the best. My local dealer persuaded me to put these on and they are bloody spot on in the dry and the wet well chuffed.

DJB,
Have to disagree there mate, i do not disagree that F1s are good as i have had some before, but you don't need to spend extra money when there are other tyres out there that are cheaper and just as good, and to be honest to get the best out of most tyres and be able to distiguish between the better ones you need to be a profesional driver IMHO. Who are we to say a tyre doesn't perform when the tyre companies spend 10s of millions developing these performance tyres, for jo public to tell people they don't work.
The one problem in my opinion with BBS boards is that a few peoples opinions can influence lots of other peoples opinions and end up putting a good product at the bottom of the pile. So i would definately never say the phrase "That is the best"
Just my 2Ps worth,
James.

Paul, haven't checked prices for nearly a year but couldn't beat
micheldever and not a bad drive back to wear them in.

H-B,
I've heard Northern Batteries in Hudds are supposed to be good - I'm supposed to be ringing them for some prices on F1s as the gb fell through but might hang on a bit to squeeze a bit more out of mine yet

Hi Apple - I've done just over 19,000, and the original front Bridgestones are virtually bald. And the rears haven't much further to go.
I'll try them tomorrow for a price. How about a mini group buy???
Cheers, HB.

HB - let me know if you find out a price for 4-off F1s 215/45x17 fitted & properly balanced or supply only
do you know /can you find out the difference between std and XL (eXtra Load) version - for those of us carrying the extra load?
the gb was about 85-ish quid a corner for that size and AFAIR blackcircles & SIDC discount is about that price as a starter for ten...

South Shore Tyres in Blackpool also got some in for me at £91.62 per corner fitted & balanced - apparently uses a supplier on south coast somewhere - cheaper than local wharehouses!
I did suffer with a sidewall failure on one in the 1st week. Took it back and he said it was classic pinch damage and manufacturer would not refund on that! So had to shell out for another one!

Despite me being no expert, and hence running the risk of offering useless advice (as suggested above) ... I can say with confidence that I ran F1's on my MY97 UK Turbo in the 215/40/16 size.
In the GS-D2 version, these were fantastic, but wore them out on a spirited driving course with Don Palmer, to then replace them with what has to be a COMPLETELY different tyre in the newer GS-D3. To my inexperienced mind, these are absolute CR4P compared to the D2's, where the sidewall play was so bad that I couldn't easily predict the roll over under hard cornering/slaloming, with much, much more understeer as a result. I hated the damn things, and threw them away to replace with Toyo's (since the D2's are sadly no longer available). Even the Toyo's aren't up to that standard, feeling too hard with more oversteer.
Just my 2p's worth.
