5 stud pcd100(?) offset aim for 51 to 53...48 known to foul rear arches but can usually get away with removing the rubber strip under there.

Information about 17" wheels and tyres, some of the information is my opinion (tyre choice) other info is fact

On the classic shaped Impreza (MY92-00):

PCD 5 * 100 (same as VW, Audi, etc but they use an offset of ET35 which will make the wheels stick out by 12mm too much!!!)
ET 48-53

Subaru/Prodrive recommended tyre size: 205/45 R17
Alternative (wider range) tyre size: 215/40 R17

(Do a search on tyres, as opinions will vary. Below my personal opinion)

Tyres to consider: Goodyear Eagle F1/Toyo Proxie TS-1/Bridgestone SO-3

Tyres not recommended: Avon ZZR/Pirelli PZero

(Personal experience)

I ran wheels with an offset of ET45 and they caught on the lip of the arch. Removing the rubber on the arch can help, but I feel it was made worse by the choice of 215/40R17 tyres. 205/45R17 tyres are not as wide and *may* have made a difference.

In the end I changed them for the OZ Prodrive P1 wheels, with an offset of ET53 (I think) and even with 215/40R17 tyres, there was no issue!

Andy, Subaru recommend Pirelli PZero's. These are good if you do a lot of motorway driving, as they are hard wearing, but it takes a lot to get them up to temp.
