Sound like a good idea as long as they don't look too w4nk - I get lazy checking my tyres but the problem is you cannot tell visually (18" low profiles) whether they're losing air or not - i.e. the side walls are so stiff they don't sag at all.

Look forward to hearing more.

Question

Hello everyone,

I've seen these advertised in this week's Sunday Times Driving section (P13). These are replacement tyre valve covers that show up green (assuming your tyres are correctly inflated) or go red if the tyre has deflated any.

Has anyone tried these. They seem good value but only if they work (£12.50 per set of 4). I saw something similar on the father-in-law's new E-class Merc the other day and assumed it was part of some swanky tyre monitoring system, but maybe it's just the same old cheapy system? He's on holiday now so I can't ask him

Thanks in advance for any comments

I've got some. Had them for two weeks, so haven't had chance to really test them.

Not quite sure how they work, but if the pressure in the tyre changes by +/-2 psi the tell tale red tag will be triggered.

I'm not sure if they're going to stay on though. They're a bit big and stick out quite a bit - TBH they look slightly NAFF IMHO.

Why don't you just buy a digital gauge from Halfords for about the same price?

It looks better, works more acurately and won't be nicked by little ***** for their BMXs.

Just a suggestion.

The smaller the gauge the less accurate they are. You would be better off as per one of the above posts using a digital gauge from the likes of halfords.

I've got a good gauge as well. I plan to check the caps against the gauge over a period of a few weeks to see how good they are.

The advantage of them is to allow you to see a tyre that slowly deflates. I check my tyres weekly, but still got caught with a slow puncture. These should pick up this sort of problem, since you can visually check them daily.

Nigel,

I've got a digital gauge from Halfords as well, but to be honest I can't remember when the last time was I actually got it out of the glovebox. Stretching to many many weeks I think. I was hoping this may give me "that warm tingly feeling" so would appreciate any updates you can give over their usefulness.

Cheers

Righto then. I've had 'em two weeks, and they're saying pressures are OK, I'll check with my (calibrated) gauge at the weekend and let you know if they're telling the truth

Checked them with my gauge today and they were correct. The real test will come when one of the tyres goes down, but I don't really want to find that our

Thumbs down

They don't work

Tested tyre pressure last weekend and found them all down by 4-5 psi. This was probably down to the weather, I put the caps on when it was 25 dec C ambient and now it's 5 deg C.
