Outrageous brake pad prices...is ther an alternative?
#1
Just got back from having my MY2002 WRX serviced at 20000 miles. Boy it sure hurts to pay £140 for a five minute oil and filter change, they didnt even need to change the air filter as I have a panel filter fitted.
What hurt more was being told on the phone that the front pads neede replacement and it would be a further £150 ish for that. So I decided to buy the pads and fit myself. Ouch !! they charged me £105. Thats absolute robbery. But I had no choice because my local Motor Factors told me that as yet nobody makes a non-OE pad for the WRX.
Does anyone know if this is true?
What hurt even more was when I came to fit them this weekend I found that the original pads had still got 5 mm thickness left and didnt need replacement anyway !!

have a cosy seat and breathe deeply.........we do O.E.M quality pads for.........less than £50inc. VAT!!!! for the money you've paid you are not far away from a "proper" pad........
personally i would return them to Subaru and get your money back.......
best of luck,

Stratman, I think you have been "done" IIRC, there are plenty of aftermarket pads in OE fitment for the Scoob - just look at all the usual suspects as most of them have a selection.....

As Alyn says, you can get quite a few "performance" brake pads for the money!
My standard pads cost me £40 from Partco. (Inc VAT IIRC) It's only a half hour job to change them on Subaru 4 pots too.

Thanks guys for your comments
I have always bought my pads from Brakes International here in Rochdale, and fitted them myself on my previouse 3 classic scoobs ( its a doddle ) but in this case they told me that there was nothing available in aftermarket pads for the WRX MY2002, which is why I coughed up the £105.
Well I am going to take em back and contact Alyn or Partco and do it myself.
Cheers

Yes I'm on my 3rd set of front pads on my my01 & can confirm that they are the same as the 99 model Impreza & Nissan 300ZX, I use mintex pads which I get for £25 from my local very friendly motor factors !
The part nos. is MDB1416AF
Hope this helps, I hate hearing about people getting ripped off !

I replaced the standard ones due to unbelievable squealing with a set from Graham Goode Racing, for around £40. They've been excellent so far, about 16,000 miles ago and still got a fair bit left on them.

You could also do a lot worse than speak to Lyndon or John at Performance Braking on 01600 713117. Pagid pads at excellent prices, and top people to boot...

One dealer i spoke to before buying my STI 8, said "don't bother paying £300 for the OE Brembo pads, go find some cheaper aftermarket alternatives and we'll fit them for you".
Mintex/Ferodo/Pagid look like the options when the time comes.

I hunted everywhere for non-OEM rear pads for a MY02. Ended up paying £90 for OEM ones!
Performance Braking definitely do the Pagid version, and I daresay the likes of Tweeks and Alyn would carry suitable pads too.

£25 for the 4 pot pads from Godfreys motor factors in Leeds..as you say i went to subaru first and they wantedt £105 for the same pads.
By the way the ones from Godfreys are actually Mintex but not sure what compound?

Well, you weren't expecting 1155's for £25 were you?
Tend to look at these things as a false economy though. Bearing in mind you can get proper pads for £60 to £70, £25 quid for pigeon poo that wears and fades doesn't seem like a particularly good deal.
