I'm worried about a noise coming from the back of my MY99 Turbo. It sounds like amplified road noise [edited to add like a droaning noise]getting louder with increased speed whether the wheels are being driven or freewheeling. My rear tyres are ready to be swapped and will be this weekend. Have been playing with pressures but nothing extreme. Currently they're Bridgestone Potenzas.

Is this the start of a wheel bearing on it's way out or is it noise from the tyres 'coz they're on their last legs? I'm told bearings going on Turbo's is rare, but knowing my luck!!!

Anyone had this before? Any comments/views welcomed.

Cheers.

Max.

I think I have the same problem with my01 wrx but when I put it into my scooby dealer they couldn't find anything wrong .
The car goes in next week to get a new clutch and fly wheel fitted so i will ask them to check again . If they find anything I will let u know .

Cheers Phil.

I'm getting new rubber on the back this weekend. Like wise if that clears things I'll post on here.

Just out of interest what condition are your tyres and have you been exploring with pressures? Also, what did your dealer think was causing the noise?

Thumbs up

Funny that....

I thought my rear wheel bearings were away as well since the noise would increase in relation to road speed, but have just changed to a different tyre (old ones were okay) and the noise is gone.
Try and borrow a different set of wheels and tyres for 10 mins and this should confirm.

I still have a good bit of tread left on the back tires .
Dealer just said they could not find anything (typical) .
My tires pressures are set with the hand book .

I've been suffering some noise from the rear end for quite some time now(no comments on that ).

Roadnoise and squeeling, I thought it may have been a bearing problem, I have since solved the squeeling (hand brake).

But I still had problems with a rumbling/roar noise, which could be confused with a duff bearing. So I swapped my 17" wheels that were on the car when I bought it to the original 15" wheels (supplied with the car) with the original Bridgestones on.

I have found the noise is far more quiet now, and is what could be described as normal tyre noise. So Your problem could well be the tyres.

My thoughts too. New rear tyres this weekend for me.

But my dilema now is how much to spend and what do I go for?

tyres proving harder to get hold of. Trying to get F1's but supply is little tricky.

Toyo's second choice if the F1's are too elusive. Noise still rumbling on, but more confident it's the tyres rather than the bearing.

Time will tell.

Right then.

F1's fitted, at last. Noise still there, so it’s off to the dealer to take the service manager for a spin to check the noise out.

Another thought I've had is that the tyres are new and so may quieten once properly scrubbed in. Any thoughts peeps?

Will update after my chat with the dealer.

Cheers

Max
