Question

When I brake hard, the car pulles to one side and then a second later feels like it pulls to the other (but this could just be the force evening up).

Noticed it on the M-Way this morning, and again when I tried a heavy brake test near work. Supprised nme a bit the first time as it was quite pronouced.

Could it be the brakes need bleeding?

I had a similar problem which was usually worse when going downhill !
Having the alignment set cleared it up.

Nimbus,

I had the very same problem on my MY99 RB5. When I braked hard, the car pulled (sometimes violently) to the right. I first noticed it on a slight downhill slope along a single-track country road, so at first I put it down to severe tramlining or just a rut in the road. It was so bad I had to lift off otherwise I'd have ended up down a ditch.

I had a mechanic take it for a drive on Saturday morning to help diagnose the fault. At first it was fine from 50mph, but I asked him to take it along a local dual carraigeway and try again from 80mph. This time it pulled hard to the right.

He immediately thought it was an imbalance in the braking system. One possibility was a caliper problem where one caliper (the drivers side) is putting more force on the pad than the nearside, causing the car to pull to the right.

His first thought was it may just be some air in one of the systems. He explained that there are two systems - driver-side front, passenger-side rear and passenger-side front, driver-side rear. He thought that there maybe some air trapped in the system and so the caliper isn't providing the same force as the drivers-side caliper. He bled both systems to check and right enough there was some air in the passenger-side.

Braking is now solid and the car doesn't pull in either direction.

Alignment and wheel balance would be something else to try as these can cause steering wheel wobble under braking or more often just generally when driving.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the reply.

I should have said that it was the car that wobbled, not the wheels..

It only happens when I brake hard and I gave be a bit of a shock when it happened today. I thought I had a flat tyre! You can notice it at lower speeds/force too, but it's not as bad.

I think I'll get the whole system bled. Hopfully that will clear it up.
