On monday my RB5 went to my local scooby dealer to have the front discs upgraded to drilled and grooved. Same diameter. I have now done 120 slow driving/braking miles and they are sweaking on light brake preasure just before the car stops and also when braking going backwards. The service manager is telling me now (after the instailation) that this is very normal. He said the STI's do it! Is this right? ? He's comment was that the manufactures are interested in the stopping power not the noise level.
Please give me your comments as i'm pi$$ed off already.

Thanks Adam

I dont think any standard car has squealing brakes, other than very rarely.

Have you simply changed the discs or also the pads?

In any case, the pads need settling in, taking the shape of the disc. Give it some time.

I am pretty sure they shouldn't squeak. Sounds like a classic case of "they all do that sir"! If I spent £25k on an STI there is no way I would accept squeaky brakes.
My RB5 squeaks when braking in reverse, as did my previous MY99. Having said that, my rear pads are very low so that may be the reason for this. Could be the same on yours.
If it is your front brakes squeaking I would take it back in. The pads have all sorts of silly clips which are designed to stop them squaking. I am guessing the upgrade wasn't exactly cheap so tell them to put it right.

Well my RB5 never squeaked breaking whilst moving forwards or reverse.

What discs and pads have you fitted? Mintex pads have a tendancy to squeal a little when cold.

Usually, you put some copperslip behind the pad to stop this.

Yes they were Mintex. only front done, disc and pad. cost just short of £500. 2 drill/grooved discs plus pads on front. ouch!!!
Thank for comments. yes i will give it time to see if it changes.
service guy also said the the GT3 or GT4 also has squealing brakes. Should i name the company or not.......have a guess.
Thanks again and look forward for more comments

I have mintex pads fitted with drilled + grooved discs and was told by the supplier (before I bought them) that mintex pads have a tendancy to squeal. Mine squeal when going backwards and slightly going forwards but IMHO the improved braking far outways the occasional squeal.
p.s. car is a MY99 turbo.
also what discs are they ? they seem quite expensive (mine are the black diamond ones with the mintex 1144 pads & they cost me about £250 but I had to fit them myself)
Hope this helps, Mike.
