i have a my94 mk2 legacy wagon that is on standard ride height springs. in order to have larger rims but keep the same overall diameter i'm going to have to increase the width of the tyres from 205/55/15 to 245/35/17, will these fit under the arches without mods or will i have to beat them out in order to retain full lock. i know i could use 215/40/17 but i want to have as much rubber on the road as possible.

I think you need to do your sums again.
Std size on legacy turbo is 205/60-15 ON 6.5" rims, i run 205/50-16 on 7" rims (2000 spec impreza).
Basically run std Impreza sizes, so 17s would be something like 215/40-17 or 205/45-17, both on 7" wide rims
You will never (in a million years) get 235 width under the arches.
Edited 'cause I read you want as wide as possible. You might get in some 7.5" rims with 225 wide with a different offset to pull rims in. Either way, 7" rims are very tight as it is, ideally I want to get the flange on the inside of the arch to be rolled in, I caught it the other day and pulled it down.
If you want more grip, buy better tyres, it's much easier, and I would pick better, more expensive 205s over cheap 235s any day.
