Question

Just got my first scooby. Everything about it is wonderful except for the brakes. I believe it currently has the standard setup which for car of this speed should be very good. Unfortunately my old Mondeo or my wife's Mazda 323F could probably outbrake it!
There doesn't seem to be any bite and I have to press really hard to stop in a reasonable time.
The brakes aren’t excessively worn, I've had them checked by a dealer and the AA inspection, both said they've still got some life in them.
Is there something I can change in the short term to improve things without costing me an arm and a leg or will I have to invest in a whole new setup.
Any advice on which way to go would be most welcome.

Cheers,
James

Hi James,

sorry, but yes, the standard brake setup is cr@p. I have a 97 model with 2 piston brakes. I bought some discs, pads, fluid, hoses and 4 pot calipers from the 99 model. The braking is now DECENT but not great. This is just a temporary setup until I fit some better calipers.

The good news is: there are plenty of good aftermarket kits that will help you out there. They're not exactly cheap though.

It's a late MY99 so I assume has the the 4 pot calipers already! I dread to think what it must be like with 2 pots!

Cool

The 4pot caliper isn't all that bad, a decent set of pads and discs would make a big difference.

Question

Right, that's what I was wondering. What's a good pad to get? I see the Ferodo DS2500 generally gets good reviews.
What's the best discs to get for a sensible amount of money???

Another question, I saw Halfords do pads for it for about £25. Has anyone tried these or would it be a waste of money?

had a worrying moment earlier this evening; caning around the back roads, breaking hard.... fried the fronts 2 pot capliers on the front of my 98 have to go - may as well have coasted to a standstill. I heard that replacing the 2 pots with a secondhand sti kit is a good way to go. True?
