My cousin (swansea scooby doo) runs this size in dunlops on his STI V on 17s. Drop him a line at this thread he posted earlier :

225/45x17 tyres will most likely not fit without rubbing, unless you roll in the arches etc. They might be fine without anything in the car, or in a straight line, but they'll most likely rub at the rear under heavy loads.
These tyres are some 5% "taller" in terms of gearing than the more normal 215/40x17, which means your speedo will be under-reading by 5%, but more importantly, your acceleration could be some 5% slower due to the bigger tyres/taller gearing.
As there's virtually no difference in price (the 225s might be slightly more expensive), I can't see any real reason for wanting to go to this size. The standard suspension certainly wouldn't be optimised for a tyre of this size/width.

Thanks for the info John, I was only contemplating this tyre size because that is the size fitted to some wheels I am thinking of buying on the forum. I would prefer to have 215/45s, but you have to take whats available! By the way, what does "rolling the arches" entail?! sounds drastic!
