Bolt Through Tyre Tred

Taking in a tyre tomorrow that has a bolt through the tread. All tyres have approx 5mm of tread. This is a back tyre.
If it is unrepairable, can I put on one new back tyre with 8mm and the other with 5 mm or do I need two. Tyre size 225 45 17 on STI 7 UK rims
