1st number is tyre width in mm

2nd number is the aspect ratio, it specifies the sidewall height and is based on the width (1st number). Sidewall height = width * aspect ratio in %

3rd number is wheel diameter in inch.

Just a quick response to the last post, but tyres only have about 8mm tread on them when new! If changing them when they reach 3mm,you are only using 75% of the tyres life? I agree that 1.6mm is too low,but surly 3mm upwards is a tad premature to warrent a new set of tyres? With the weather starting to improve, and the road conditions becoming better, using the extra 1mm before changing the tyres would not make any noticable differance to the level of grip they give, but would allow you value for money surely?

you call 3mm on a tyre good!! i think the legal limit is about 1.5mm or there abouts. is this a yugo you are drivin or a subaru. remember you are putting anything from 215 - 300 bhp through these things. 3mm aint a lot of wear left but thats my opinion, others may feel differently. deffo don't be puttin crap on each corner, they may actually save your life.

cheers
