The only answer is to take lots of time doing it. Preparation is the key to it. Loads of brake cleaner or ally wheel cleaner to get them clean and then remove as much of the crap paint as you can leaving the smoothest surface possible. Then slap on the paint, 3-4 coats i would think. I would leave the car over night before driving.

here's what i did...

1. Wheel off, wire brush on the calipers. Even better if you have drill attachment.

2. As soon as you've got all of the old crap and dust off, spray with Halfords brake cleaner (£5) As soon as it starts to run off clear, there're clean.

3. Hammerite them! Takes about 20mins max with a smallish brush.

4. You can then attempt the lettering if you want, I did - although I didn't find any shortcut at all - just patience and a square cut brush!

all in all they look very good - although I'd allow the best part of a day - oh, and check the weather forecast too!!!
