Someone has some wheels and tyres for sale and they say the tyres have about 5 or 6 mm left on them - is this a lot?? or not - in this case how many miles are the wheels likely to have done already???

cheers

All depends on what the tyres are, what they were on and how they've been driven, and how you'll be driving on them! i.e. they could be worn in the corners meaning a hard life or wrong tyre pressure or misaligned suspension. Modern tyres can generally take hard driving, but not abuse.

My last change I went for new Bridgestone S-03's, I've done about 13,000 on them and I still have ~4mm left on them (some of you guys will no doubt think I drive too slowly!).

As with all second hand tyres be very careful and give them a thorough inspection, at the end of the day they're the only thing you're in contact with the road with.

Personally I only buy new as it's the only guarantee. Worth the extra pennies.
