How long should STI7 Brake pads last
#4
Just had my 20,000 mile service done on my STi7 and the brake pads are wearing just nicely according to my dealer, with no mention of having to change them soon !! And believe me I'm not easy on brakes, according to my husband who cleans the wheels for me !!
(How lucky can a girl get)
Get a second opinion on yours maybe???
Cheers

Yeah!!!!!!!!! I've had this too
I drive 40 miles a day round a bypass hence not much braking. Within 7k miles (5 months) I wrecked a set of front pads and the dealer claimed it was cause I 'used' them and must have been 'hammering' the car. Now when I drive the car hard, I drive it HARD. But I hardly ever get the chance to do this. Take 40milesx5daysx5months and it doesn't leave a lot of none-commuting driving in which to wreck them. Factor in no track days and you start to get very suspicious. What can you do though I paid my money and got new pads

I fitted EBC Green stuff pads to my Sti7. Warranty runs out in March (Euro import) so no huge issue there. The EBC pads were £56 for the set. Feel better than the original ones ever did.

240 squids
when mine are due i'll be seriously thinking of voiding the warranty and fit after markets, prob better pads anyway.
am i right that only the brakes will be voided eg. calipers and discs?
oh yes not forgeting the wheels, wrong type of brake dust on them.

Its all down to how you drive as others have said
What i did find on my RB5 (And i know it wasn't an Sti) was that the brakes could wear out if the brakes had been over heated.
I had this and the pads were only half worn at 16K but I had to change due to brake fade

Firstly,
You should check them yourself to see how much meat there really is on them and if you get them replaced, tell them before hand that you want to keep the old parts. That sometimes stops you being ripped off....
Clubby, I think you will find that your EU warranty is in fact two years, not one (bear that in mind)...

My WRX fronts are gone at 11K and rears not far off.
Dealer will charge £70 labour to fit-Forget that!
I've changed pads before but never 4 pots. Are they easy enough?
Any tips, Do's/dont's
Also I'm not bothered about warranty on brakes so which are the best alternative makes? Read some bad reports about greenstuff recently.

Tony,
I presume you've got 2500s in your standard STi Brembo calipers? How do they compare to the OE pads for feel, performace, and amount of crap left stuck to the wheel ?

Just clocked 19k miles on my STI 7. Pads are down to their last few days now, so ordered a set of Pagid RS42 Blues yesterday.
I am hard on my brakes, and 19k miles is very good for meI feel. They certainly wont make 20k
have always felt that the standard brakes are a bit limp so gonna try different pads now. If discs wear faster than the current rate, then they'll go as well. In fact, after having AP 6's on my last Scoob, i'll probably switch to them when the time comes....
Cheers

YorkshireSimon,
You'll probably find that with the pads replaced, and maybe a Fluid change, the brakes become substantially better.
I've recently fitted RS15's and I'm able to drop the speed from 120/130 -> 40 Mph fade free every time.
Awesome braking!

Arron,
Rug was not of my chosing would have been Blue with Yellow stars in if my choise LOL
Matt,
Standard Brembo calipers and yes DS2500's not much different feel to the OEM Brembo pads. Performance seems to be better cold and hot But did feel pretty STD on the a Driver Devolpment day track use would require DS3000's IMHO. And at half the price of OEM's
Brake knock off (dust) no different loadds of it and brake squeal slightly more on Reverse IMHO
Tony
Not worried about warrentee on the brakes, there ain't none !!! I mentioned warrentee and my brake pad/disc wear on the last Scoob he just laughed LOL

It is possible that the pads are shot and if your dealer has said they are you'd better check Take the wheels off so you can see both pads as they don't always wear evenly. Anything less than 3mm of pad is scrap.
If they have worn unevely, the pistons are probably sticking, in which case the calipers will need servicing. We are talking OEM brakes/pads/wheels, aren't we?
Ferodo DS2500 are good pads. Check out ScoobyShop (Jamie Whitfield is JW Racing).
Cheers,
Richard.

Hoppy,
I change mine at 7k as there was 3-4mm left and doing Bedford so fitted DS2500's (from JWR) which let me with the STD Brembo's as an Emergancy set for any other driver development days as got caught out day with no spare Pads 2 years ago I did Donny on the Saturday and again Sunday (SIDC day)
Felt slightly better than STD Brembo pads, but not greatly, same or even noiseyier in Rev. same knock off. but Half the price of BremBo's. If I were doing quite a few trackdays would have considered DS3000's
Tony
Pad wear was even

Yes, STI Type UK
STI MAN
I hope that I see a marked improvement on the OEM pads. I am sure I will, although they won't be as flash as yours. How are discs wearing on those pads, or have you changed the discs as well??
Cheers

YS,
Have not noticed a big diffence in disc wear yet. I'm not really too worried about the wear rates, as I believe that the pads and the discs are not lifetime fit and forget items.

Totally agree, I loved my old AP 6's on my MY00. Sold them on as I thought the standard Brembo brakes would do the job, track days as well if I ever get on one... And they are good, but just not that crazy braking performance that you need when pushing the car
Cheers
