upgrade to 17s, tyres,offsets and cambers

I got a MY99 UK turbo with the standard 16" rims with Bridgestone potenza 205/50 16 rubber. I want to get 17s on it tho, but in my older cars i've had real probs with tyre wear and poor handling. I think the best tyre size to go for is 215/40 17 but i dont know what rubber to choose, as i've seen some people slaggin off the bridgestones. And do i need to change offsets and cambers.
Any ideas

OEM rubber is sh1te. Bridgestone SO-2pp is generally believed to be the best, but is discontinued and the SO-3 is not rated.
Goodyear F1 or Toyo T1-S in 215/40x17 is the top choice. The performance difference between these and OEM tyres is astonishing.
Prodrive recommend 52mm off-set and anything less than 50mm can rub the rear arches. Remember this when buying new wheels.
Geometry is another story. I'd get the new tyres fitted and a geo check done at the same time. If you've had a ding or summat it'll show up and need sorting. Even if it hasn't it can still be way out, such are Subaru's tolerances.
Drive the car, feel the handling, check the tyre wear. If you're not happy, get a pukka set-up done. Power Station in Cheltenham are Scoob handling experts with some mega-trick set-up kit (get the bump-steer mod done) but there are many others that don't have such a high profile on here. No doubt others will post names.

Anyone else got any ideas, especially like to hear from people who have had probs and how they got it sorted. But looking at the amount of scoobs on 17s it looks like an easy upgrade.

Realistically, if you have new wheels put on your car (and tyres) then you should have the tracking done, this should eliminate any problems (as long as you are within the tolerences for wheel/tyre combination).
