Thanks for the advice Iain, I went to the Avon website and compared the ZZ1's to the ZZ3's. As far as I can tell the compounds are different and the tread pattern is VERY different. The only way to find out how good they are is to try I guess...
Cheers

Been speaking to my local tyre fitter about replacing the OEM Bridgestones on my MY02 WRX. Done not too bad, got about 13,000 miles out of them. I am looking for a hard-wearing tyre to get as many miles out of a set as possible, without compromising *too* much on handling (difficult enough paying for the loan and the petrol ).
I have been recommended the above, any thoughts or alternate suggestions are appreciated.
Cheers

I've not tried the ZZ3.
but the ZZ1 was a dangerous tyre in the damp let alone wet You will find that's the general opinion of most on here that have used ZZ1's.
They may have improved for the ZZ3, but I'll never use Avons again after nearly writing the car off due to them!!!
Try Falken's 451 (I think that's the number)
Iain.

What do you recommend Mr STi, bear in mind that I want a fairly long lasting tyre...? I must admit I am a bit of an old fart usually and don't push the car to the limit that often and the wife has it 90 % of the time!

The ZZ3 still came last (very last) in the Evo tyre test, a good compromise would be a Toyo (which came 3rd out of 8th ) and would be around the same price (give or take a pound )

The Eagles were top of my list but then I was told they wear out fairly quickly.... What about BF Goodrich Profiler? I can get these tyres fairly cheap and have been told that they grip as well as the OEM Bridgestones if not better.

Jim,
the new Eagles - the GSD3 - seem to have a better wear rate than the old. Mate has them on his 330bhp Wagon (ok its not been 330 all the time they've been fitted but a fair while) and he doesn't exactly give them mercy . He's done 15k on them so far and still more left, prob 5k he thinks if he switched front to back
Cheers

Thanks for the offer si.. I can get the Goodrich's for £310 delivered. Since no one else seems to have tried them I will give them a go as a guinea pig and will report back on any weaknesses etc. Can't do much harm surely if I am carefull to begin with!

Yeap ZZ1's are a no go area damp and wet grip is unheard of, I'd go with the GSD-3's best tyre on the market and no stupidly priced if you shop around.

I have ZZ3's on my WRX and they are fine in both the wet and dry...in fact just took them on a run in the wet with other scoobs with toyo's etc on...the day was very slippy but I had the same levels of grip and could maintain the same speeds as the other guys...
so IMHO they are fine!
