My MY97 has the hades effect manhole covers trigger it most

Hopefully the MY03 won't suffer

(edited cos I can't spell hades... )

Anyone else out there think the ABS on the MY01 is a little on the "sharp" side. IE. Hit the brakes anything like hard on a surface that is anything but mirror smooth and that's full ABS for you! I know this can throw ABS systems, as I've experienced this in other cars (though can't remember a problem in either of the previous two scoobs MY97/99). I'm not talking of ludicrous speeds here!

Comments anyone?

The ABS seems to kick in to soon on a bumpy or uneven surface.

I think this is a trait going way back with Scoobies

Don't think there is a problem on a good quality flat road (judging by track days in an MY01 in the rain!).

This is definitely a trait of the MY01+ WRX. I get it every now and again and quite disturbing it is too. Never happened on my MY99.

Contemplating some sort of brake upgrade soon and just wondering if this will make the problem worse?

Can very rarely feel the ABS kick on my MY00 unless its real wet and I slam on the anchors. No complaints here.

Mmmm totaly agree...

You wait until it snows - then you will really need to be careful as the damn abs totaly ruins ANY breaking you think you'll get at it just STAYS ON all the time.

Be really careful dudes - practise before you start off as you have to break really gently so the abs doesnt kick in and spoil things.

Mine does something that feels like ABS on fairly moderate braking on dodgy surfaces. Then you press harder, and it stops harder and you loose the ABS effect. Confusing and worrying when it first happens, but not normally a problem Worth trying it out somewhere safe if you can.

Same thing keeps happening to me - all it needs is firm breaking approaching a junction or roundabout - then if one front wheel goes over a bump or a manhole cover or something, one comes the ABS, quite unnecessarily. Also quite annoying as it makes the car lurch out of control slightly.

I've had the same results as hades...ABS comes on at odd times under light to moderate braking...push harder, and it stops. The problem has almost gone since I had the suspension changed (Prodrive kit) on MY02 WRx and increased the tyre pressure slightly.

Question

Is there a way of disconnecting it cos i'm sure i could get much more controlled braking without it

Thumbs down

Yup, I get this. It's a know trait of the MY01-. Can happen at any speed a very annoying. But push the pedal harder and the car will stop in quite a hurry, though. Unfortunately this usually means you come to a halt far too soon having put the passenger through the window. It always takes me by surprise and I previously got off the brake but I find that braking a bit harder and the car usually settles back onto the tyres and stops quite well. I have been told it improves with better tyres, ie no the OEM items? Anybody with tyre upgrades still experiences the over enthusiastic ABS?

Agree totally with everyone. ABS is incredibly easy to trigger in MY01+. No improvement with F1's. I find that upward slopes to be almost impossible to break on without the brake pedal judder.
