Wheel arch bounces onto tyres 18" wheels!!
#1
Hi guys
My scooby has 18" gold prodrive alloys (225x40 18.) Normally when I'm driving on my 'jack jones' all is okay excepte on bad unlevelled road surfaces however, when loaded - 3 kids in back and wife in the front it becomes a problem with the wheel arch at rear often contacting the tyre!!
My solution is not to take the family out! Someone suggested I take my scooby to a good body shop and have part the lip of the body rubbed away.
Is this a common problem with 18" wheels and do you have any ideas how to overcome - maybe I need to buy some 16" wheels?
Regards
John

You could try 215/35/18 tyres..
I have 215/35/19 tyres and only get rubbing at the back with 2 adults in the back...
What model car you got... ignore my thoughts if you have a MY02>

John,
'if' you have a classic shape car, and a uk one at that, you may wish to take of the bit of black rubber that they put around the arch, if you've got an import, then you haven't got this anyway, so my typeing will have been a waste of time, but hey, it's worth a shot!

My type R/A rubs like a bitch with 17s fitted with 225s, but is fine with 215s.
Having said that you did mention 18s not 17s so please ignore me.

Mine rubbed on the track during hard cornering with 205x16's, but only on the RH side.
Now running 215x17's and of course it's a little worse. Just spoken to a friend with an MR2 and he's just had a body shop roll the lip slightly. Only cost him 60 quid for both rear sides and the job was perfect!

Yeah I agree with these guys. maybe go down a size in the actual tyre and it should be fine. A P1 came in the other day and it was rubbing a bit on his 18s (cant remember what the tyre size was). We had to remove bits from under the wheel arch and he doesnt have any problems now even with all his family in the car.
So first go down a tyre size and sees that work. But this can cost money as you have to buy a whole new sets of tyres! So your best bit is to go to a bodyshop a get the arches underneath cut back. I assume you have wheel arches or the arches are rolled already otherwise wouldnt the wheel stick out to much!
