I need to replace the front brake pads on my MY01 WRX. Whilst i could go the original equipment route I thought I may as well buy the best pads available for the same price, about £100. What I thought would be an easy task has'nt been so easy, lots of retailers recomend different manufacturers and woryingly also different types or patterns. - Deep Joy !

To make things clear I don't do track days but I want a good pad for fast road use. The most common recommendation seems to be Mintex but what type ? is it a MDB1155 or a MDB1688 and what compound? 1144 or 1155 ? If anyone can help with an informed answer - it can be another brand for about £100 even, just so long as I can order the right parts first time !

And if you know a good supplier that would be the cherry on the cake !

I would recommend either Ferodo DS2500's which a lot of folk use on here or Mintex 1144 which I use coupled with Godspeed discs.

However, uprated pads will probably knacker OEM discs, so it's a good idea to uprate those too - TSL's group N's a re good value if you do not o track days.

The mintex 1155 are very good pads but they create massive amounts of dust. Try the Ferodo pads- they're excellent.

Thanks for the recomendations . It looks like DS2500 then. Can you tell me tho- is that the part no or the compound ? If its the compound do you know the part no? and who's a good retailer?

I also am getting new break pads (all round). Sounds like Neal and I drive the same. I have been reading about breaks called the 'red stuff'. I have got a qoute for these at £105 all in including delivery on 99MY UK turbo standard (not for long). Could anybody tell me if these are good breaks or not?

Not keen on EBC brake pads, be they 'green stuff' or 'red stuff'.

They're really not is the same league as the Ferodo in my humble opinion.

there's a question ! I've been variously recomended and not recomended EBS brakes - they make Red/Green/yellow and Blue stuff etc. For fast road I think its the Green Stuff you need. As I don't know much about EBS, just heard of them, I decided to stick to a big brand, thats not to say EBS is not good. I've said this before, but no harm in repeating it!

Pagid RS 421 pads. I've recently fitted these to my MY00 Turbo and I'm very impressed, brake feel is excellent, better from cold than standard and just seem to get better and better the hotter they get. I got mine from Performance Braking in Monmouth, 01600 713117, I know they had them in stock last Friday, so they can do them next day, or even same day if you ring in the morning.

I've tried the EBC reds and just thought they were an accident waiting to happen IMHO. I've not tried the Mintex or Ferodo's on this car though, previous experience is that they are good but generate vast quantities of dust.

Part Number for Ferodo DS2500's to fit MY01 is FCP986H.Circuit Supplies on 01525 385888 do em for just short of £140 inc the vat. On my 15k service,I got my dealer to fit Goodridge brake hoses too and this has improved pedal feel.Coupled with the DS2500's (When my std pads are due for replacement),braking performance should be a lot better!!!!
