Question

Hi Guys

anyone had this?

on a couple of 01 -02 cars with 18" Proxes on.. a persistant balance problem.. whip the wheels off.. they balance beautifully. A week or so later out again.

So marking the tyre and rim it is easy to ascertain that the tyre is actually moving around on the rim .. hence the imbalance. Its happened to at least four cars that i know of..only that tyre.. only 18"..

have any scooby peeps out there had similar experiences?

Cheers

Paul

Paul,

I have a persistent 'wheel out of balance' wobble (above 70mph) since putting TS-1's on. Had them balanced at several places who always reported them being perfectly balanced.

Just kinda of got used to it now

I noticed it straight away when I had my Toyos fitted. The wobble, although not bad, starts at 80 mph but seems to disappear (or I don't notice it ) about 90 mph.
I have had them rebalanced at Subaru and Tyres Northampton but has made little difference.

Hmmm, think I will try Goodyears next time if other Scoobs have this problem.

I certainly never had this'wobble' with the OEM Bridgestones.

Tyres rotating on rims?

Worth marking rim and tyre to make sure, but I doubt they could at road pressures with sensible torque.

Fapping 'ell Trouser are you sure the tyre is moving on the rim?

Can just picture someone locked up and not stopping because the tyres are sliding round on the wheels.

I have T1-S on mine last time and they were fine. Have you measured the wheels to check that they are not under sized. Ditto the tyres - oversized.

Reminds me of when my dad sold a set of Triumph Vitesse wheels to a bloke over the road. The thing with Vitesse wheels is that over time they matched themselves to the splines on the hub. Bloke drove down the road and braked -- the axles stopped but the wheels didn't

Pete mate.. they're not moving much.. but they are moving .. as i said. we marked the tyre and the rim on the inside.. actually took s few close up digi pics just case and the movement is there.

tyre seems to be in spec according to Toyo's response and had the wheels checked at the factory at rimstock just to be sure.. and those lil' buggers are creepin' round

i don't think its a major safety issue as even on our car braking hard..the ABS will cut without any discernable slip felt.. just more annoying that we have to keep balancing the wheels really

cheers

Unhappy

Trouser,

You can add me to the list (you know my problems only too well). The wobble is always around the 75 to 80mph mark then it goes off. Weird!!

If the tyres are slipping on the wheel is that a tyre or wheel problem?

Have you tried other tyre types on the wheels to see what results you get? If its the Toyo's then maybe those of us having this problem ought to meet up with a Toyo specialist at your place F2F to sort this out?

WB

Forgot to say that despite this the overall handling is ok. For the record, had this exact same problem also with Toyo Proxes 16's on standard Scooby rims. No solutio found then, overall handling was also good.

(drastic solution!!!!!!!!!)

use self tapping screws through the rim into the outside of the bead, and put a small dowty seal under head.

works on race tyres!

Exclamation

I assume all those with problems have 18" (wheels that is!!) I have been using 17" T1-S for 16K with no balance probs. I got them re-balanced once since new as part of a geometry set-up.
