two pot to four pot
#1
I have a MY98 scoob, which I understand has 2 pot front calipers and was wondering if putting 4 pot calipers from the MY99+ on when I come round to replacing the discs and pads is a worthwhile upgrade?
I don't want to pay for a f-off great big set of Alcons or the like, as the car's only used on the road. Anyone with any experience of doing this, your thoughts would be appreciated.

its worth doing if you can get them cheap enough, i did it on my first scoob using new parts , cost me nearly £700, not worth it, i sold the 4 pots off my p1 for £250, worth that i think

Will be doing this to mine (MY96) as soon as I get new wheels sorted out...
Be careful, as some wheels don't fit with the Subaru 4 pot calipers
Think it will be worth it - gives much more scope for the future, and it will be better once done as well

Sorry to barge in, but I also have a question regarding upgrading from 2pots to 4-pots. I have managed to get a second hand set including the discs, pads and caliper. However, I have been told that it is not a straight swap to put the 4-pots onto the car as I am increasing the diameter of the disc from 277 to 294. Can someone who has done this before please tell me what part(s) I will need as my local Subaru dealer are not being too helpful.
Is it the monting bracket and pins or something similar?
Cheers.

The brakes off the the later models with the 294mm four pots , will fit the earlier models with 277mm 2 pots , they are a direct fit , you will need calipers , pads and discs , the hoses are suitable for both types of calipers , the only problem fitting the 4 pots could be wheel clearance
Hope this helps , Ian

Thanks Ian,
I have the subaru 17" rims, so clearance shouldn't be a problem. My car is actually a MY98 Legacy GT Twin Turbo running on standard 2 pots with 277mm discs. So the 4 pots off a MY2000 should actually mount straight onto the old 'brackets'? How about the increase in diameter of the discs and thus caliper position?
thanks in advance, if it is true then my Subaru dealer is having me on saying I still neet to buy new parts and stuff!!

As already stated the 4 pot setup is a direct replacement (for the impreza at least!!)...the 4 pot calipers mounted onto the existing bracket are positioned correctly for the 294mm disc/pad setup, don't know who your dealer is but if you supply him with calipers/discs/pads from a MY99+ you should not need anything other than fluid - I know this for a fact as I had mine done recently by main dealer, the excellent Beechadale Subaru of Nottingham
Did you explain to dealer that you have complete setup? Or is there a diffence between the legacy and impreza setup?
hope this helps....melon

You need about 60mm from the rotor outer pad face to the inside of the wheel spokes to clear the outer piston body of the calliper. This really has only been an issue on the legacy with the short wheel offset. (16" x 6.5)

Check that they will fit behind your wheels first, I had 17" Prodrive/Speedline Chronos/SuperTourismos and they don't clear the spokes. I found this out after I'd already bought brand new 4pots, discs, pads etc from Graham Goode, luckily they did take them back without fuss.
I've been told that for road use, the 4pots will offer a massive improvement over the standard 2 pots.

Thanks for all the advice, I have the original Subaru 17" alloys which come with the new bugeyes so clearance shouldn't be a problem. Mike, if you have the original 16" they should fit too.
