No, serious question The service schedule is 2 years or 30000 miles to replace, so given I am using it hard I wondered if half the time and a third of the mileage was about right. How often would you change it? Yes, I am changing my (fully synth 15W50) oil after 3000 miles and four recent track days.

(IMHO) Most people change their oil after every track day, many change it before and after, as for brake fluid, I'd say after that much abuse it's due a change as well.

Changing oil after every track day sounds a little excessive? I heard the results of someone who sent his oil for analysis after several competition sessions at Knockhill and found that after I think 5 sessions there was no signficant degradation. Does a modern synthetic oil really need changing after every trackday?

Agree with maintaining well, but where it is actually necessary and not because it is fashionable. I asked about the DOT 5.1 as the brakes are as good as ever and never faded, although if they had gone off gradually then you could argue I wouldn't notice.

So how often are people changing their brake fluid?

I would normally change it after 5000 miles or so, but I often boil it, so it needs more frequent changes. And the dry boiling point is 300°C...

I was digging out some spare brake pads for Knockhill tomorrow. Kind of a history of my Scooby driving - the original Subaru pads almost pristine, and then a series of completely shagged pads from when I started driving more enthusiastically Like a fossil record of my granny days. I'll reward it with brake fluid, oil and a new turbo on Sunday

You use DOT 5.1 brake fluid. This is hygroscopic fluid and will require regular replacing, especially when you boil it on the track and condensation forms!

In fact, your current fluid is already ****** big time since you've done 10,000 miles and 4 track days on it!!!

John

I think with this use and the "humid" Scottish climate, its worth you changing it at least once a year. Go for AP or Silkolene.

Cladius

Remarkably ingenious way of getting round the swear word filter, but totally uncalled for. Its there because children also read this bbs.

I can tell from your response that children read this BBS, please excuse me, little boy God damn it! I was trying to make a point regarding brake fluid quality which is very important as John uses his car on the track (what if he hits something because of boiling fluid causing fade?? Blue hit something at Donni, but maybe you dont care either as long as he doesnt say "F**k" but rather "oh dear"??). So gimme a break (break, brake, hahaha) and let's talk about brakes in the brakes forum, shall we? [rant mode off]
