I've just gone for the Goodyear F1's. Much quieter than the OEM tyres. Recommended buy a lot of people of this board and available from nearly all tyre dealers. The other tyres I looked at where the Toyo T1's and Bridgestone S03's. The Toyo's where difficult to get hold of and the Bridgestones where too expensive.

Mr M, please note that you should always change all 4 tyres at the same time due to the 4WD set up (not just 2 as the thread says)

Chiming in from the US. Mine are 16" size, but I just got some new Dunlop SP9000s to replace my very worn OEMs, in April.

They're a Max Performance rating, but not as great a dry tire as they are a wet tire (really what they're designed for).

But if you drive in a lot of realistic conditions, maybe they'd be a worthy consideration. Awesome in the rain.

got myself 4 Toyo's the other week, which are good in the dry and give a lot of confidence in the wet. When i've slicked these one's i will definately re-invest in some more. Quite cheap too!
£305 fitted. (215/40/17)

can someone please explain to me why, as Jo says, it's necessary to change all 4 tyres at the same time.

The argument is that the differentials need all four changed at once.
My garage - not a dealer - reckons that you should change axles as a pair but no need to change all four at once (unless you have to for legal reasons).
I decline any responsibility for the consequences on someone else's car but I'm about to change only the front pair on my car.

cheers chris, anyone else got any views or reasons why I and MR M shouldn't buy just 2 new F1's for the front and leave the RE11's on the back.

Thanks in advance.

Boultsy, fitting different tyres front and rear is a very bad plan, IMHO. Upsetting the diffs is one thing, but upsetting the balance of the whole car is quite another. I really wouldn't do it. If you change your tyres around front to rear every 3/4,000 miles (I switch mine every time I do an oil change) the front/rear wear works out very even and you then replace the lot together.

Another reason: getting good rubber all round is the single biggest performance upgrade you can get. You won't regret it

Cheers,

Richard.

I have to agree with Hoppy. I replaced all four pirellis yesterday on MY00 with Toyo Proxes 215/40 & already have noticed a big difference in handling, especially in the wet - much less understeer. In future I am going to swap the wheels around every 6 months or so as I have noticed that the rears wear faster. In my case after 14k miles the fronts had approx 2.5mm left whn the rears were practically slick. I can't wait to try the car out "properly" tonight.....

cheers rich, still not convinced about the upsetting the diffs bit but the balance being effected by different front (F1's) and rear (RE011) sounds valid.

Good tip about swapping front to back, and the new rubber all round = performance upgradeLOL, sounds like a good excuse to get some new rimms at the same time then and sell the old rimms on as part worn full size spares.

My information comes from a friend who runs his own tyre & exhaust business and has done for the past 15 years. It is not a sales ploy on his part but he recommends (not insists) that all 4WD vehicles change all 4 for the reasons stated above.

Cool

I have an 02, and the best tyres are the Bridgestone's, pay more but last.
Toyo's are great. Had them on my last car, fantastic and not too expensive.
Had 215/40R17 for £300 all in!!
