Thumbs up

I painted my brakes red..... looks fantastic, my car is black with red trim.

Used some kit from Halfords, cost about £20.

Halfords do their own Caliper paint (£9.99) though you will need some brake cleaner.
Did mine blue at the weekend

Best advice is to take your time and clean the caliper up properly. Preparation is the key with this!

thanks guys - just a few questions then;

1. how long for a decent job?
2. brake cleaner - how does this work
3. do i need two kits (two colours) as I want the 'subaru' text to be white??? (white on red/black might look cool?)

I'm thinking of doing this too because they have greyed a little. I have a silver car and was thinking of silver calipers with red writing but am not too sure because the wheels are silver as well.

Anyone think it will look cool?

.........and, what happens if you use spray/foam brake dust remover kits, does the paint come off as well?

Cleaner is a spray can, seems to work kind of like an alcohol type cleaner, you spray it on and it evaporates pretty quickly.

You will need two paints if you want different colours, you could buy one kit with all the bits you need and an additional tin of VHT Halfords paint for the other colour.

It took me about a week to do mine but that's coz i went to undo one wheel and bent the key for the locking wheelnut!!

Seriously, it depends if you can take all the wheels off your car at the same time or not and how many calipers you are doing. If you're just doing the fronts themn you should be able to prep both calipers then paint at the same time.

Only advise needed is to spend loads of time cleaning the brakes, i took my calipers apart completely and wirebrushed / dremmeled the lot. Once on, it's kind of like plasticoating so it's fairly easy to clean.

To prep the calipers remove the pads and any shims, then thoughly clean with a wire brush all the areas you intend to paint. Be carefull of the rubber gaitors!!

I used a bit of coarse wet & dry papper to smooth off any flatish areas and the flat of the Subaru logo.

Now spray the caliper with the cleaner (solvent).
Leave to dry.

Mask the rubber gator bits and bleed nipples if you think it nessasary
And paint.

If your using a 2 part paint, mix up enough to do the calipers you have prep'ed.

Leave to dry.
When fully dry you can flat off the Subaru logo with the wet & dry paper and paint with your other colour.

Most caliper paints are enamel based so should be same with all cleaning products. If you think it might effect the paint you shouln't be using it!!!!!!

Hope this helps a few of you
Iain.

i used hammerite smooth to paint mine black 18 months ago. prepared with wire brushing then brake cleaner. two coats painted with the calipers in-situ. still look fine and clean easily with regular wheel cleaner (i use wonder wheels). i never got to pick out the 'subaru' in white and won't bother now!

Have always used Hammerite smooth. It stands up to temp. OK and about £5 for small tin. Hand paint with artist brush.

Yes, have to agree. Used hammerite on mine too (silver car & silver wheels) used silver hammerite. Did it 2 years ago and is looking a bit faded now but stands up to all kinds of sh*t. Must get round to doing them again now that I'm fitting new discs & pads.
