REMAP
Getting more confused.
Have been told the only thing left to do is have a remap.
Why do prices vary so much, from 300ish to lots more.
Have been told to have new ecu, then told just to have new info mapped on to existing.
Somebody tell me the right thing to do?Dont want to pay out,to find i need somthing else.
Thanks.

I went for Simtek, so I paid for new ECU and Remap, costed almost £1300 but thats what I wanted. If you just remap ECU you have its £500 ish + vat usually. Some of that is for license so subsequent maps are £300 ish. Its all about paying for software, a bit like windows "stuff" on computers.

depends what you want as an end result really, some ecu's are re-mappable (is that a word??!!) and some aren't, plus the sky's the limit you could pay between a few hundred quid and up towards £1k+ if you went silly.
you're best bet is to talk to someone in the know who's not just out for a sale at the end of the day and in all honesty i'd recommend AET Turbos as your first port of call, very friendly and are great suppliers

Nothing on your car without the right mods. I have an 03WRX which I'm currently having upgraded. But it was making 355bhp.
What mods do you have so far? There are other ways to make a quick car rather than just bhp figures.

VF35 from an STI is the easy (cheapest !) way to get to around 330 bhp...
(Ask Monkeydile, he's got mine now !), plus pink injectors and a re-map.
Ecutek cost more as the first £200 goes to the software company for the use of the software, a further re-map is done at cost only, so about £200 cheaper.

I'v had a couple of re maps. (Ecutec)
car runs ace & I know its not running lean.
BUT it depends on how far you want to go.
I want more flexy so should of gonr down Frostys road and gone for Simtec, as I'v paid for 2 remaps and I'm still going to get Simtec in the end, then you can have Launch control and anty lag, and bangs out of the pipe and flames and mor flames,
So Simtec it is if you ask Me
But don't ask frosty, He don' know.

Watch out for your clutch as well, monkeydiles only lasted about an hour after he got his map sorted the second time to run on the vf35. It goes like hell now
Go see Chy at pennine subaru and have a chat with him, very helpful and knowledgeable guy , explained everything i would need to do to mine to get it up to 350.

Whole thing ran sweet as a nut until my Friday afternoon bottom end bearings gave way Now having a 2.5 with a few other bits and bobs fitted.
You sound like you have a good starting point, but if you want to do more than you have already it would be worth speaking to a specialist, if only to hear the pros and cons and get a realistic idea on price.
Doing mods properly isn't cheap, and there are very few people that know how to do it right.

If your current ECU is capable of taking the power you are running then no point wasting your money buying a new one.
Who told you to change it and what was their reasons based on m8?
In general a scoob ecu is pretty good but if you are after big power, mode switches, switchable maps and gadgets like anti lag and launch controls then you would need to consider a new ECU which provides this.
Call Surrey ROlling Road and speak to Charlie or Pat about their Solaris ECU. I have that on mine with anti lag and launch control as well as a mode switch (allows you change your boost settings) - then again I am not running a std car. If you can, get your mapping done by Pat Herborn - he is a genious! He is usually found at SC or Surrey ROlling Road but does travel around.

VF 35 is the std. fit turbo on 2002 STI, good for 340 bhp on mine, till I sold it to Monkeydile.
Then add injectors (pink on the STI) from same, and sprinkle with laptop magic.... £1200 plus labour is my best guess.

to get 330bhp you will need some STI injectors and a bigger turbo (VF35 or 34 as dunx said). Both can be found 2nd hand pretty cheap. plus a remap obviously
