WYIOC - May EOM - 31st @Squires from 7:30
OK.. back to some gods and goddesses and a little edumacation....
WYIOC Style
May is named after the Greek goddess, Maia. She gave birth to the Olympian Hermes. Hermes was also a Centaur class aircraft carrier we sold to India in 1989 after is had started to fall apart... Herpes sounds similar but is something entirely different. Jubilee clip anyone?
The month is a time of great celebrations in the northern hemisphere. Especially in the club as this is now proper light night and light morning territory and means we can enjoy each others company some more.
May Day (Garland Day)
May day marks the end of the harsh winter months and welcomes the beginning of Summer. For our ancestors, largely in rural areas, it was a major annual festival and was celebrated through out the country, especially on the first of May with music, dancing and games.
For Paul Crafts however, it's a bugger. He can be often seen driving round in his coal van trampling on the flowers and burning down these quaint village fetes because this is the month it gets warmer and his coal sales go through the floor.
One famous May day Poem goes like this...
The first of May is Garland Day
So please remember the garland.
We don't come here but once a year,
So please remember the garland.
Mmmm. I can see why that was so popular... A Classic to rival Hey Jude.. Moving on.
There are still garland ceremonies today. At Charlton-on-Otmore, Oxfordshire, a large wooden cross covered with yew and box leaves stands above the rood screen in the church. On May Day this is taken down and redecorated with fresh greenery and flowers and the children carry small decorated crosses around the village and bring them to a special service.
They certainly know how to celebrate in Charlton-on-Otmore.. eh? That bender sure must take some getting over...
Also in Oxfordshire at Brampton, the Spring Bank Holiday marks the beginning of the traditional Morris Dance Season. Now we have something to go on here as John (fl6 to his friends) is a pro-Morris dancer and is hoping to set up a WYIOC Morris dancing spectacular at this years NBO.. If you'd like to have a go, simply PM fl6 in your thousands with something like 'I want to be a Morris Dancer... Just like you'. John will kindly answer every PM... Really.
May Day Superstition
First thing in the morning on May 1st, young girls used to rush out into the garden to wash their faces in the May dew. Why?
They'd probably woken up under the covers after one of Mick's infamous 'fluffers'. To be honest, they'd be better of with Vim and a good scrubbing brush...
There is an old tale that says that May dew has magic properties and that anyone who has washed their face in it will have a beautiful complexion all through the year. This dew was supposed to be able to remove freckles and also spots and pimples.
Now, I've heard Dazza (and probably every bloke in the land) use this same excuse for an entirely different kind of Dew. Go on love... just pop this on your face and it'll give you a great complexion.. no really.. I read it somewhere...
Other Superstition for May
The month of may was considered an unlucky month particularly for getting married.
Isn't Knobby & Helen getting hitched soon???? Can I have the Ferrari if it all goes wrong??
Being born in May was thought to produce a sickly child. Sticky's not been looking too good lately... Obviously a May baby...
Weather-lore, beliefs and sayings
"Those who bathe in May Will soon be laid in clay"
JB!!!! Fill the bath!!!! Now!!!!
Oak Apple Day
This is the day that traditionally people wear oak apples or oak leaves pinned to them to remember that on May 29th King Charles ll returned triumphantly to London after the restoration of the monarchy in 1660.
Until well into the twentieth century, anyone caught not wearing an oak leaf or oak apple on May 29th could be pinched, kicked, or otherwise abused. Whipping with nettles was a favourite punishment, hence the name 'Nettle Day' in some areas.
I really think this should be added to the WYIOC initiation ceremony... This is so steeped in history that Dazza's 2 Hr Rubber glove and vaseline process looks a little tired... So make sure you wear your Oak leaf on Thursday or else!!!
6th May - 1954 Roger Bannister ran a mile in less than four minutes.
8th May - 1945 VE (Victory in Europe) Day.
9th May Captain Blood attempted to steal the crown jewels in 1671
10th May- 1994 Nelson Mandela became the President of South Africa.
12th May- 1820 Florence Nightingale was born.
15th May The Romans believed this was the birthday of Mercury, the messenger and son of Zeus who could travel with the speed of thought.
18th May - 1955 The first Wimpy Bar opened in London. Have a treat and visit your local Wimpy, or have a burger night.
18th May - 1991 Helen Sharman became the first British woman in space.
28th May - 1908 Ian Fleming, author of the James Bond books, was born.
29th May - 1953 Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reached the summit of Everest.
29th May Oak Apple Day.
30th May 1431 Joan of Arc was burned at the stake. (no, we won't be re-creating this)
30th May Death of King Arthur in 542
Now that was some list of notable happenings..... much better than last month..
So, if you want to come along and see Mick & Stu wearing nothing but tiny Oak leaves and you wish to kick, punch, whip or abuse anyone not wearing one, then come along to the Squires EOM...
There'll be much hilarity and we even get our car park back!!! Hoorah!!
The brickworks convoy (7pm) will meet up with the Trading post convoy (7:20) for a super convoy in to Squires...
See you there!!!!!!!!!
