Had a bit of a spirited drive yesterday with an Evo 5 and had an alarming stink of transmission oil after No drips or any oil under the car just the smell. Any ideas?

Front diff leaking oil, gearbox input shaft oil seal, engine rear crankshaft oil seal, transfer box oil seals, rear diff leaking until you can get it on a ramp/lift it's all guess work unless you can see a leak under the car.

Have you checked the gearbox oil level? As Ty said, until you see visible signs it will be guesswork! Bloody cars

Also on the headers too, if it's a slight leak then it could last a while! Have you got your Mk1 sniffer on the go to smell where it's coming from?

Have you got wrapped headers there Calvin ? I had a leaking rocker cover gasket last year and had a similar thing when it got hot, oil was dripping onto the wrapped headers and when the car had more beans than normal I used to have a ploom of oily smoke creaping from under the bonnet. All well after it was replaced and burnt off.

No wrapped headers Si. No sign of leaks anywhere. Obviously working 9-5 everyday now it's hard to get it checked out. No smoke either so i cant see if anything is getting on the exhaust

Sounds as though insufficient lubrication in your gearbox/diff and as the load increases as does the friction resulting in temperature increase. A oil change may cure it depending how hot the cogs etc have become during operation, also your oil grade may loose efficiency operating above a certain temp depending on what quality oil your using. Best to change the oil for quality brand asap.

If it's leak rather than a lubrication problem it's most likely the gearbox primary shaft seal is weeping, due to excessive play caused by a worn spigot bearing.
