Been out to start the car now and it's a no go
Had this problem a few weeks back but it seemed to clear.
Open the car as usual and turn the ignition on and all the warning lights come on and off as usual, but the car wont start. The starter just makes a clicking noise when the key returns from the start position
Any ideas?

What Dylan said but I would consider something bigger than a tap
. Is the alternator charging the battery?
I know these guys have a few starter motors/alternators about.

Sticking starter motor solenoid, it sounds like it is sticking/jamming and that is what the clicking noise is.
As Dylan suggests give it a tap with a hammer and it should work as a short term solution but I'd look at changing the starter motor or solenoid before too long.

Mine starter started to stick but I used put it in second gear and rock the car and it would start. Try it!
Last weekend I took it off, Cleaned it up and sprayed some WD40 and it's as good as new now.

Thanks guys. Bit confused now though cos left the car for an hour went out and it started first time
And (touches wood) it was fine all night. Dont think it's a battery issue as everything else works fine, lights, radio, windows ect just wont start.

Starter motor solenoid...
To be honest you are better off changing the complete starter motor for three reasons:
1. If the solenoid has started to break down then the starter motor won't be far behind it anyway.
2. You are going to have to remove the starter motor in order to get at the solenoid anyway.
3. I don't think you can buy the solenoid seperate from the starter motor.
I'd also have a look at getting yours reconditioned as this sometimes works out cheaper than buying a replacement s/x unit.
As for the actual mechanics involved I haven't got a clue I'm afraid.

Don't need to remove the intercooler. You'll need a 12mm, 14mm and a 17mm.
12 for the main power in.
14 for the bolt that goes through the starter, gearbox and engine, also has the earth as a washer.
17 for the nut underneath.
HTH.

I had this on my first classic, nice big crow bar and whacked the starter motor when the key is turned and voila, no more dramas
As said above tho, may be worth changing it or getting it refurbed!! Good instructions Dylan
might be a bit tight for a slightly more shovel handed person
