Best Mate about to go........
In 1997 much against my wishes the (soon to be) ex decided we needed a dog. We where feed up of moving around the world and would buy our own place and a dog would look after her when I was away. Off to the Dog Trust for a small jack russel type mutt. But no, we ended up with a Doberman/Greyhound cross.
Now he's been with us ever since, he's saved one of the cats who was choking, he came into the living room whinging and would not stop until we followed him into the where the cat had helped it's self to the bin and had a chicken bone stick i it's throat. He's only cost me food and some stitches when a Jack Russell bit him. Followed me everywhere, only barked when the front door was knocked and was an awesome with the children and grandchildren.
Since the ex as gone he's been the one I whinge too, shares my pizza crusts (and the odd beer), never answered back but would always meet me with a wagging tail and a glint in his eye and all he'd want was a scratch and a tin of food. Recently he's been coming to work too.
But "Chief" is now beyond repair and once the family have said goodbye he's off the the doggy pound in the sky at 3pm on Tuesday.

Sorry to hear about your dog Ian, there are only two things you can rely on in this life:
1. Taxes will always rise regardless of who is in control.
2. A dog really is man's best friend.
Hope that all goes as well as it can.

I remember once hearing we should be sad when we lose our pets but happy that we knew them.
I think losing a dog can hurt more than losing family sometimes.

Gutted for you Ian, anyone who hasn't had a dog can't understand how close you get to them. Its like one of the closest family passing away. Hope today goes as least painfully as possible.

RIP Chief.
We had to say an early goodbye to my Doberman, Dexter a few years ago now. He developed a heart problem and we had to make the decision before nature took it's course. It took many months to come to terms with it as "dexter" was my wing man, always there, always taking an interest in what I was doing. I was working on "that" day and had a call from my wife to tell me that he'd gone. I had to leave work and compose myself and still miss him today even though we now have Vinnie the Viszla to keep us entertained. It's not an easy time Ian so look after yourself and remember the good times.

I never thought it would be as bad as it is. Like Dean said, always there, never wanted for much and as faithful as the sun going up in the morning and going down at night. The silly things have started to happen now, no dog basket in the corner, no wet nose in my ear when I am having a kip on the settee. The grandaughter asking "Where's Chiefy dog gone?".
Thanks everyone.
Thanks everyone.
