Default Bad News after advice

Hey all,
im not very technical when it comes to cars so bare with me ! lol. My classic wrx/sti died on me this morning. The steering went heavy then the whole car died. When the AA came out, i discovered that i had broken a crank (big one at the front lower part of the engine). When i reached the garage i was told that more than likley the timing has beein ruined with would have toasted the valves etc. Bad new as im getting married in just under 5 weeks and was going to go for a 10 day road trip through france for my honeymoon in the car (glad it didnt happen when i was out there !!).
Thing is , where do i go from here ?, do i replace engine ? (bodywork isnt great on the car) scrap it ? sell it as a spare repair ?. Either way i know i will lose or spend a few bob in the process !!

Depending on age and condition break it for spares. At least you'll get a few quid back. A rebuild will cost a few Łk's to get it done properly or see if a accident damaged car is in the "Sales" area.

My engine went on track last year and I was tempted to sell it for spares etc but I bit the bullet and went for the big power build! You can look for a standard engine but can't guarantee what life it's had or go for a rebuild by a reputable company like Engine Tuner or API, both great companies with excellent cred! Hope this helps

My Zen forged build cost Ł4200 and Merv's is a tad more specced up than my build

If the engine is shot and the bodywork "isn't great" and you don't break it then I'd be looking to drop a replacement standard engine in there. Also budget for a full service on the spare engine (timing belt, pulleys, plugs, filters etc) for a little piece of mind when you get it back on the road. Not sure how much an engine from a breakers would cost to be honest but I think you could easily kiss goodbye to a grand (and probably then some)

There are a few people on here that could no doubt do the spanner work for less Ł's than a specialist.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

About 2.5k will get you an STi newage engine fitted but would have to have get the 6 speed box etc, an STi engine from a classic would be cheaper but not much probably!

As Dean said above, mine cost a wee bit more but worth it IMO

i bought my classic as a "non runner" and got a 6 month warantyed engine off ebay for Ł695 INC P&P fitted it myself and jobs a goodun.

if you want to sell the car as is then drop me a pm with what you want for it and i would collect it

or if you wanted to get another engine and want a hand fitting it you could use my garage on sat/sun (fully kitted with all the tools and ramps)

I'd wait and see what the garage says and then see whats out there. If you're going to start shopping for parts the details of your car are:

WRX (STi Version) 10/93 - 08/94

Applied Model: GC8B48D
Options: BJ
Engine:EJ20G DW2HE
Gearbox TY752VB3CA

First appearance of STi, modified from production WRX

Short answer is no. Long answer:

Bucket-style HLA EJ20G usage:

Impreza WRX 92~96
Impreza WRX Wagon 92~96
Impreza WRX STI 93~96
EUDM Subaru Impreza Turbo 94~96
Power output ranges from 220 PS @ 6000 rpm and 260 Nm for the WRX Wagons to 275 PS @ 6500 rpm and 319 Nm for the WRX STI Version II.

Engines can be identified by coil on plug with 1 M8 bolt per coil and valve covers with 4CAM 16VALVE and horizontal lines above the plug holes. Generally these engines all have the slanted intercooler. Some engines may not have HLA buckets but solid buckets with shims underneath. These engines also feature lighter valves, the intake valves are marked INKO and the exhaust valves are marked EXKO. The standard HLA valves are I252 and E283 respectively. All WRX Wagon engines and automatic sedan engines came with a TD04 with 90 deg elbow, all manual WRX sedans including STI versions all had a TD05 with 90 deg elbow.

if bodywork on the car is not great i would just get rid tbh as it doesnt seem worth putting thousands of pounds into an old car with a not very good shell. put it into buying another you can get them cheap enough now.

^ both talking sense IMO
Kyledim I've sort of been where you are now and I know its a hard decision & the bugger is your losing money eitherway. My engine went 1 month after getting my96 JDM WRX (private sale) 2 years ago and I ended up going down the full engine rebuild route. I had it done by API Impreza (fantastic Impreza specialists) and am very pleased with my engine still after some 16,000+ miles. But it's not cheap wherever you go for that level of work unfortunately so ultimately its your decision on how much you actually want to keep that particular car and sink money into it (no point doing all that & selling it a year or two later).
I'm sure if you give David at API Impreza a call he could help you with some friendly advice and give you some idea of the costs involved if you do want a re-build, second hand engine etc. Goodluck

Thanks for the comment.

Kyle, it really is your shout. Lee wants your wreck and there's a reasonable car for sale. Go with your head not your heart. Money pit or trickling of cash.

cheers all for the advice,
just spoken to the garage and engine is totally shot.................... Dragoon i think your right. I will probably sell the car as it is, I will give first refusal to rich (reedwards) as he has helped me out over the past few monts in tidying up the car. So i think im going to buy a daily driver and then look at taking on another scoob after my wedding. Such a shame tho it had only done about 69k think i should cut my losses. If you are interested in the car as it is let me know and if rich dont want it your open to take it off my hands
