Default Hot smelling and pressurising coolant system

Right then, the girlfriends uk turbo is pressurising the header tank and it's giving that hot smell of cooked anti freeze. It's running fine on short trips but if it's either driven hard or for long periods this is happening. I am thinking that there is air in the system maybe?? Heaters are working just fine. Any thoughts?

Sounds like a leaking rad but there are a couple of things it could be, rad, leaking heater matrix (strange curry smell usually with this), knackered expansion cap or at the other end of the scale a head gasket. Lets hope it's a £10 rad cap or the rad!
Dave.

Could be a thermostat.

If it's OK on short trips the thermostat may not open because your not reaching high temeratures, long trips it should open but may not as it could be fooked, hence the smell only on long runs.

I'd check the cap, then test the thermostat. At least those won't cost you anything to do.

I have a compression tester here if you need it checking.
