I think its because the piston rings dont make a perfect seal so you can then get gases/oil in the crank which is released by the crank case vents. The gases are then directed back into the intake system to be re burnt so i think the catch can is there so rather that it getting burnt again it goes into the tank?
But as always i could be wrong

Cheers Does that mean the oil level in the car is compromised or do you just re-fill the sump ? or is the oil that's in the Catch tank not that much ?

My oil catch tank has a sight glass so you can see how much oil is i it, after 2 years of ownership its never needed emptying but it does have an overflow pipe should it fill.
To empty it has a drain plug but I dont think its any quantity if full.

I guess if it suddenly started to fill on a regular basis your engine would be trying to tell you something.

Cheers mate - I saw a couple in the Demon Tweekes catalogue today and thought that I would like one but as you can see I know nothing about them

The idea that it mat rapidly fill up, as you suggested, is a bit scary though

I pulled this off the CDF Racing site.

TBH I think if the catch started to full quickly you would have or about to have engine problems.

Simon,
I've got one of these (yet to be fitted). Pop over this weekend to check out the quality, it's fantastic.
