Default Newage wrx intercooler

Posted on behalf of Mark (mp24)
Does anybody have the piece for a wrx intercooler which goes to the dump valve such as an original valve or anything else that can go on there.
Here's a pic

Cheers

Chris has very kindly made me a blanking plate

The question is if i run the car without a dump valve will i cause damage to the turbo?

The turbo is a vf22 running 1.3 bar of boost.

Mark the valve is there for a reason, if I was you I'd wait and get the full shaabonka.

The Dump Valve allows excess air to be released. Without it the excess pressure will go to the turbo.

You could end up with turbo bits in the engine...................eek!

vf22's r know for being very fragile so I wouldn't run it with out a dump valve if I was u, they don't like running at high boost either think 1.3 bar is about the recommend max.

I just found this

IHI VF22
(490cfm at 18.0psi, 250-325whp, Bolt-On)
This is the standard equipment turbocharger used on the JDM V3 Subaru Impreza WRX and optional on the JDM Subaru Impreza WRX STi 22b. Of all the IHI models, the VF22 has the largest potential for peak horsepower, and is capable of supporting the highest boost levels. It is capable of running up to 25 psi. The VF22 is a roller bearing turbo that utilizes the P20 exhaust housing.
Expect to achieve full boost with the proper mods and a quality tune between 3200-3700rpms. 2002-2005 WRX owners will need fuel upgrades for this turbocharger and proper engine management is highly recommended for all vehicles.

Mark,

We are just trying to save you dramas mate. If turbo fins end up in the engine that two things to pay for.

How many money bags of change do you have in the taxi?

25PSI thats over 1.7bar, Andy F only reccomends up to 1.4 for any of the VF series turbos and the VF3* turbos are known to be a lot stronger than the VF2* turbos
Think it is the blades that r particulary weak on the VF22's, i've got one on the Type R it is mapped to 1.3bar and i wouldn't even consider running it at any more than that.

Prodrive quote the maximum boost pressure for the VF22 as 1.3 bar as anything in excess of 1.3 bar falls outside its efficency range so the turbo will run hotter without flowing any extra air. Turbine blade failures and bearing damage due to over heating are known to happen running greater boost levels.
As Dean has already mentioned the early IHI VF turbos are weaker so it's advised not to blank the dump valve off. Subaru's have run without dump valves on the later IHI VF30 range, TD04 and various TD05's including the hybrid 18g and 20g without any problems and reported agains in throttle recovery.
So replace your turbo and chatter away.

this has probably been asked and i apologise for my ignorance. but whats the standard psi/bar a standard v3 sti should boost at?

just curious as i seem to sometimes hit around 1.5 on my defi gauges

however i know sometimes gauges can be out but doubt it will be that much out on the defi set up

Mark,

I have now managed to get a hose which I think will fit. It's been a nightmare getting the right shape so I gave up. Tried Pirtek, Samco (don't sell to the public ) for off cuts of the right size but failed. Everyone wants to sell the reinforced flexihose in 1 metre lengths.

So, after a bit of head scratching and delving I found this.

GATES VULCOFLEX - 225MM X 28MM VULCOFLEX - GVF-225-28

It's due tomorrow and hopefully the IC, clean sprayed and stickered up will be ready by Wednesday for a trial run.
