Default What can I do to a V3/4 STi or Type R?

Right then I am in a position to "possibly" get a V3 STi or a V3 Type R. I am pretty happy with the under carriage, running gear, brakes and body work but need some advice.

What are the tuning options with the V3 engines? Filter options with the OE air box? Not really going the FMIC route though.

Both cars have a CAIK's but I would like to keep it looking original under the bonnet, cosmetic stuff will be done later. I would like to get the feel of car and possibilities before committing.

Full decat, fuel pump and remap should see around 320bhp on either car.

Banny,

That was quick!

With regards to the remap, is it do able with the early ECU's? Have been used to the OBD ECUTek route in the past. The Type R I am looking at is on 31K, any suggestions on what to look for with the engine and running gear?

Ecu isn't remappable by ODB like V5on cars, bu there is an ESL Daughter Board that can be put in the ECU to make it mappable i beleive:
www.jollygreenmonster.co.uk
Other option is Apexi Fc or Simtek

Cheers Dean. I understand the non ECUTek issue, good to know that all is not lost though What is ntailed with the Daughterboard thing.

Are we talking a ECU strip and rebuild with a circuit board that does have the ability to be mapped?

The JGM option seems quite reasonable

Not to sure mate, think it's just an extra board that goes into the ECU, think its only available for certain versions though (not sure which ones). May be worth giving Si JGM a quick ring he'll be able to talk u through the options. But Apexi Fc and Simtek are defo available for them.

Other than that i think the V3/4 are just a tuneable as the V5/6, Air box is the sam i would of thought, some of the V3/4 suffer from piston slap i think so worth listening to the engine from cold.
MAF sensor is less prone to breaking on V3/4, there not made of chocolate like V5/6.

See my Garage.........

If you,re not going FMIC route then maybe consider Power fc/Apexi/Simtek, trouble is this does get costly, i guess with ECU, PUMP,DE-CAT we,re talking about 2kish aren,t we??

If I were in your shoes Ian I would go for the Simtek and your usual basic mods (exhaust/panel filter etc)

If you want to get every last little bit out of the standard turbo, tmic and injectors I would also go for harvey's ported headers

If your going to stick with the top mount Ian, the STi v8 intercooler is said to be the best, capable of 450 bhp i was told by a certain scottish mapper.
As for the ECU i would go Simtek and be done with it. Although there are probably plenty of Apexi Power FC's floating about due to people changing to Simtek.

Hi Ian I'm looking at going down the same route myself and am currently doing my research also. as you know i'm on the market for a new car and am giving type-r's serious consideration. the simtek ecu is all singing all dancing, and about £1200 to purchase, get installed and mapped and thats with all the extras.
My problem is trying to source type-r's fairly locally, i have not found any advertised that have been closer than say Gloucester, but i suppose you've got to be prepared to travel. the one you've seen with 31k, is it yellow??

With a bit of luck the Foggy goes next Wednesday

So the hunt now begins

Two options so far, one is a bit of a project the other a minter.

I now need these and not to much of these .

Cheers all.
