I popped out in the car for a quick spin and was giving it a little gas along a straight and suddenly power dropped of.

It is not making any noises when ticking over, but no boost pressure showing
What would be the symtoms of Turbo Failure.

I can get it to tick over but as soon as you press accelerator it just won't pick up, no boost and gets very lumpy.

SO can anyone briefly explain what I would experience if my turbo has gone

It could be a broken dump vale spring thats if you have a VTA dump valve.

Standard Dump valve.

Surely that could'nt cause it to have no Boost? Could it.

mine did, but I had a VTA.

It had the exact same sypmtons, I'm not to sure on the standard valve but it maybe worth alook in any case.

I thought that if your turbo goes you would get a lot of white smoke, I guess there could be many symptoms.

There was some smoke, but nothing much.
I managed to limp home.
I had to keep revs right down and use a high gear
as soon as you put any load on it and increased the revs it would die.

sounds like a dump valve or could have a split pipe like vacume or something or even intercooler pipes ect.. check them all

Well I bought a new turbo off ebay within 20mins of the problem (Just in case)
£200 for another VF28. ( I do love ebay)
Can't take a risk with Andy coming Wednesday.
Just hope I can get it done in time

My money would be on a split intercooler pipe, My intercooler pipe has popped off a few times and this give the same results

Well I'll be having a good look tomorrow, there was nothing obviously visible, first thing I did was check pipes.

The current turbo was on the car when engine blew and I was advised it might get noisy after a while. So I thought I'd get one in case it is gone.

Fitted an induction kit last weekend & full service & FPR fitted. So this is really the last thing I needed now.
It's at times like these that I question why I spend so much on this car.

Well the spring on the standard dump valve is OK
There is no sign of any splits in the intercooler hoses (they are samco)
The actuator on turbo is still springing back when eased forward.

there are a few other things you could try check the h t leads for any sparks when you rev that would cause loss of power,what fuel did you put in last.have you tryed reseting the ecu by taking the leads off.

I Alway use Vpower & NF
Will check the leads later.
I reset the ECU with Deltadash. No change.
By the way, no fault codes showing

If the engine continues to run/tickover when the MAF is disconnected 99.9% it's the MAF. Been there too!

Possibly the MAF, but normally if it fails to the point where it won't boost/rev etc it will cause a check engine light.
Sounds like a boost hose to me I've blown pipes off a couple of times and had the exact same symtoms, actually happened to me last night, i blew the hose of my dump valve.

I've read that's a Myth...and i tried it on mine with a known good MAF (almost brand new) and the car ticked over fine.

Put Deltadash on last night and no codes came up, so should't be MAF

What boost solenoid are you using?, possible the open time duration on your solenoid is wrong so bleeding too much boost via your wastegate. Have you tried cleaning the solenoid?. Have you checked your air filter isn't blocked, as if blocked would course the smoke due to over fueling and cause the same results your experiencing.
Turbo failures both floating shafts and roller tend to burn oil when cold and clear when oil temp increases. Sometimes times turbo efficiency isn't effected until turbine fan is effected by worn bearings, which depending on the size of oil leak can take a long time. Most turbo failures are due to turbine damage by running antilag etc, these types of failures are more sudden.

Well I've got my replacement Turbo. (ordered after 9PM last night, met guy on J33 at 1 oclock today)

New air filter cone fitted on weekend thanks John.

Hoping to get to the bottom of it tomorrow. Check compression first then work from there.
Will fit the new turbo regardless though as I've got my suspicions about the current one anyway.

I would have said intercooler pipes as well Dazzy especially if when the engine is under strain thats when the problem is. This is the symtoms i get when my intercooler pipes blow off. Loss of power under strain and black smoke as the engine over fuels, however you can limp the car a bit as long as you stay off power.

I've had a really good look and can't see anything off.
My mate who rebuilt the engine should be over tomorrow so hopefully we can get somewhere. I'll be keeping every finger and toe crossed.

Check the fuel pressure, could be a fuel related problem as I had this the other day when I was not running enough fuel pressure...

Well then. Yee Haa. It's sorted.
You won't believe this but it was a brand new plug F**d less than 20miles
NGK PFR7B plugs as well.

To say I'm happy is an understatement.
Got a spare turbo now too. I think I'll have a few tins after.
Can't believe what the problem was though due to the symptoms.

The car is not moving now until Andy comes down Wednesday.
