Anyone got any idea on what tolerance these vans operate at?
I know the ones in Dyfed Powys are set at 40 in a 30mph area.
Reason I ask is that I was sitting at just below 80 near Bridgend on Saturday morning (definately around 78 I reckon) and came over a brow and there it was.....sitting on a bridge.
My Bel Euro 550 didn't even flinch...no beeps, nothing (I know that detectors give little prior warning for laser but surely if I was lasered directly it would have beeped???)
What do ya reckon guys?
Dave

Is this the van on the bridge after Junction 33?
If so it nearly caused a big pile up last friday.
Big Merc slammed on brakes and cars had to serve to avoid it.
So much for making our roads safer?

The ones operating on the A40/A449 near Newport are set very low. I know of 4 people at work who have been caught by this van (me included, doh!). On the 70 mph sections we've had people done for, so far, 81, 83, 86mph, as well as me getting collared in the roadworks up near Abergavenny, having pulled out in front of the static camera and accelerated because of traffic, only to meet the camera van 100m up the road facing back towards the static camera. A tad unfair I feel, but hey ho.
This is a dark maroon, high top new shape Transit with black rear windows, the driver's side of which drops down. It's normally parked in the lay-by's approaching the M4 near Newport and the lay-bys towards Monmouth near to Usk. The same van, plus a Peugeot Boxer type have also been seen on the roadworks on the A465 near to Tredegar (40mph limit).
Watch out chaps (and chapesses)

Rich,
I had a chat with the guy in radar direct where I buy my gadgets from, and he said basically the same as you.
They independently test all the units they sell before stocking them and the 550 never failed to pick up a laser signal....his words " if it didn't beep he didn't target you". I've got his name and telephone no. so I'll hold him to that

Radar direct? You wouldn't happen to have a number for them would you? I think a detector is becoming a 'must have' rather than a bit pricey. Chap at work reckons he got camera'd 3 times yesterday, twice on the M4 and once near Ogmore....
Thanks.
Mike.

Talking about cameras, anyone know of any unmarked cop cars that generally travel between j34 and j46 M4? On a number of occasions i have been zapped constantly (checking the speed im doing) between these juctions and its getting a tad annoying.

Our company car has a "notice of offence" outstanding for the A449 they claim its an automatic camera device that takes the picture but obviously there are police in the van or car whatever so are these any good ? I mean do they show a clear picture ? as I am waiting for it to come back to find out who it was driving.

How many miles over the limit were you? ... I guess you will have to wait for the picture so that they can prove who was driving. If they can't prove who was driving you might get away with it.
They are getting sneakier these days, I generally go home via Blackmill (Sarn Services turn off) and there were two cops on bikes hiding behind a bush with speed guns!

We haven't a clue who was driving as the car is a "pool" car so everyone drives it ! so if this picture is not clear then we can't find out who it is at all. So we will just have to carry on with court or fine what ever they see fit although there is no law stating that you must keep a record by day or time of who is driving the vehicle so we may get lucky and just have a fine.
Who knows will post on here the outcome i.e what the picture quality is like and the sentence.

Guys
Thanks to those damn vans on the M4, I've just invested in the Bel 550 plus the LC110 Laser Jammer just in case the 550 lets me down.
CVC fitted the jammer for me last Friday, and I must say they did a great job. It's very discreet and will fire a 5 second laser blast back to diffuse the reading. Giving you enough time to reduce your speed.
I say fight laser with laser. And if I get stopped it's a garage door opener.

Those Laser Jammers are quite expensive though arnt they? Where did you get the LC110 Laser Jammer from?
I will probably pick one up though to go along with my two other speed dectors.
Shame you cant get something that would fire rockets or something!

I bought the jammer from the following :
http://www.beldirect.co.uk/lrc-100.htm
It's the best out there at the moment, and the only model to use the same laser diode as the police guns. Be careful of other makes that use cheaper diodes and omit a weaker signal.
It isn't cheap, but still probably cheaper than the amount my insurance premium would go up by if I get caught !!
It's sods law that since having it fitted last Friday - have I seen a van or policeman with a gun ??!!
I'll let you know how I get on the first time it 'goes off'.
Cheers
Nils

It seems around S.Wales a laser jammer is almost essential.
I use a Valentine 1, excellent detector but obviously not much use against laser, although on the number of times I've been targeted it has allowed me to check my speed instantly and ensure I don't have 14 sleepless nights waiting for the NIP to arrive.
One the boys I know uses a V1 and a K40 laser diffuser from Networx Automotive and swears by them both.
So far I've been lucky but resigned to the fact it's probably only a matter of time!

Yep, I got caught about 3 months ago in the roadworks on the A40 near Abergavenny (a nice welcome to Wales that was!), first time in 5 years, bit pissed off. Then almost got done 4 weeks ago near Monmouth but hopefully anchored up before it got me.
I lived in Northampton before coming here 4 months ago and thought the camera vans were bad over there, but they ain't a patch on the South Wales dibbles.
Radar detectors are a necessity over here I think.

Mike,
Anywhere along the M50/A449 is Copper proving grounds, I was cauught for doing 109Mph, and that was because I was slowing down due to my Laser sensor having a fit!
Be careful!
