Default what to build for the rb? 2.5 closed deck or 2.35 stroker??

Got the choice on which route to go down for my rb320 either 2.5 closed deck or the 2.35 stroker?? Do I keep the 2.5 engine in as the rb was made to have or do the stroker..I'm looking at around 450bhp mark and a safe one not pushing everything to max. Should imagine prices would be the same? Or is it cheaper going down buying a donor engine with all the bells on it??? Help! Lol

I'd go with the 2.35 if your pockets are deep enough and you can find a 2.2 block.

You can de-stroker a 2.5 to 2.35, either way it's the best of both worlds.

Or if your absolutely certain you'll stay at that power level you can save yourself a bag of cash and just forge your 2.5.

Agree with ditchy, it will also retain an amount of originality when you come to see it on. The RB's are getting thin on the ground and original is the new modified.

Thanks for advice I think the forged 2.5 route is best as it does keep in originality to some aspect

Bry, I was in exactly your position when my RB suffered HG failure & once stripped piston #4 was showing signs of ringland failure.

After loads & I mean loads of re-search I decided to pin the block & forge the OE EJ257.
This was only because I knew I was going to sell & with only the the forged block, machine work, uprated AP clutch, for the circa £5k it cost it seemed the better option for me in my circumstances.

But.....If I was going to keep it, from what I had re-searched it would have been a 2.35 CDB all the way. But this with all uprated components & ancillaries inc turbo, FMI, everything for 500/500+, I was looking at circa £17k.

Feel for you mate & hope you get it sorted.

You could do much worse than speak with Advanced Automotive Bry.
They've done some quality builds and a great for 'no nonsense' advice.

What exactly was the damage Bry? Limited to big end or more catastrophic?

The engine is forged already etc, is there an option to replace the bearings and give it a whirl?
aka what API do....

A new crank and some decent bearings are around £500, add a fresh pump for safety....and as long as you are happy around the 400bhp mark that could be it (plus a BR or RD remap)

Best thing to do is call us and talk it through. There is no doubt that it should stay 2.5 - or you risk creating a mongrel out of an iconic car by going 2.35, that many people that may be interested to buy in the future couldn't afford to insure.

The additional cost of going closed deck 2.35 stroker is as a minimum of £1500.00 just purely in the supply and machining of the block casting.

Give us a ring, no obligation, but we will talk you through the thought process of how to move on.

Can't recommend API and David enough.

They built my forged 2.5 back in the day when it was a relatively new conversion, she was as strong as an Ox! I had years of reliable fun after, with very usable power.

Trust me pick up the phone and speak to David and he will spend the time with you and talk you through your
options with no obligation.

Yes my last car marmite had an engine build by API and I never had no problems with it and I'm still in touch with the buyer and it's still going strong! I have put the build in deans hands (Three Arches) to start on a brand new 2.5 block as I've been advised these are weak enough without boring it out. So it's defo gonna be fully forged this time as the last owner of the rb320 had a 10k bill and only really had some omega pistons as far as forged was . On a better note Deano has done some great builds and was always on short list to do work and I finally agreed as communication with dean is always spot on and that's needed in doing something so big to your car! Keep you all posted
