How we paint the centres of discs
Just thought i'd put some details of the process we go through to paint the disc centres , as I seen a thread recently when someone was asking another brake ' expert ' if they offered painted centre's to which the reply was it only takes 5 minutes with a spray can lol
Yes it would if you only wanted it to last 5 minutes !
Anyway , first thing is to tape the edge of where the paint is going to , we use insulation tape for this as it doesn't get damaged by the blast medium when we bead blast them
We then tape up the rest of the pad area where we don't want overspray on
Next the discs are bead blasted to roughen up the bell surface so the paint has a good key to stick to
We then prime the discs grey
Before giving them 2 coats of gloss black
Then remove the tape to show the finished piece
I don't think people realise the way we do it , so thought I'd show you the extra effort we put in to bring you a first class product
Cheers Ian

Hi Martin
Depends on how hard you drive on them , and what chemicals you use on the wheels to clean them as that gets on the discs.
The discs are in such a harsh environment that nothing will last on them , even zinc plating , we have some customers with discs still looking good after a year.
Without painting them , they will go rusty overnight

Mine are fading and bits coming off after about 8 months... but probably me dripping brake fluid on them or something
Will get them off and paint them again in spring I reckon.

Nice job,
I've always used Hammerite smooth myself,
just paint it on with a narrow brush and a
steady hand and Bob's your uncle. I don't
even mask it off, any excess will burn off
when you use your brakes. Just don't paint
the whole disc obviously lol

I masked the same as you then degreased, ruffed up with a scotchpad and used Hamerite 600 degree black barbecue paint, its held up well after a year. Ideal if you dont have a sandblaster. This is great for WRX brakes as the slightest touch on the brake pedal the disc glow red hot, the pads melt and the car speeds up so I have been told.
