Default Restrictor Pills - Sizes and Locations

Guys there seems to be a lack of information on these restrictor pills so thought i would start off a technical thread which could later be moved into the tech archive.

The information lacking here is the sizes of restrictor pills and their respective boost achieved?

3 port boost solenoid - restrictor position (confirmation required is it in the bottom hose?????) Mine was. But others have mentioned a similar location to the 2 port in the wastegate hose?

Thankyou Mike, come on guys any others?

Basic Car spec and Pill size please, thus boost PIS/BAR if known.

This appears to be phenomenon, nobody seem to know this information, yet if we all put our two pennies in at leat i can create a list. I wouldnt expect anyone to start disturbing there boost pipes, but surely some folk out there know to hand?

HELP PLEASE> Thanks Rob xx

MY97 WRX 1.2mm gives me peak boost of 1 bar.

Thing is I have spent a lot of time experimenting and even 0.05mm can make a big difference. The size you need can vary wildly from car to car even different weather conditions can affect what you boost to.

bugeye WRX (17 Oct 2000 -1 May 2003) [215BHP]

standard = 1.1mm @ 0.9bar
PPP = 1.2mm @ 1.1bar

This is what my research shows but may be wrong.

Thanks

Pre 96 Pill is 2mm and goes in bottom pipe of 3-port solenoid.
97> Pill is in pipe btween turbo nipple and t-piece, which goes to actuator and boost control solenoid. This uses the 2-port solenoid.

The 2 locations have the oposite effect.

On a Pre96 removable of the restrcitor or a larger restrictor will cause boost spike, or slight increase in boost. Becomes a probem if decatted as ECU will try to compensate and somestime induce fuel-cut.

On 97> the smaller the restrictor the greater the boost. If you get boost spikes just open up the restrictor by 0.05mm at a time.

Standard Pill in a 97-99 is 1mm,STi is 0.9mm I think.

I think the later WRX 2001> had 1.1mm or maybe even 1.2mm.
I know that 2001> WRX 99% of the time need the restrictor reducing to 1mm in order to map to 1.2bar. If the restrictor isn't changes, no matter how you increase the Boost control duty it still struggles to get above 1.1bar.

I have just had my car mapped (2001 UK300 PPP), but prior to mapping running a complete standard engine spec inc a TD04, the car needed a 0.8mm to run near 0.9bar but this was due to a faulty ecu (I didnt know until i got the car mapped)

So now the car running a VF30, STI Pink 550cc, STI Turbo Up pipe, Complete 3" decat system, standard Intercooler for now, Walbro pump & green panel filter, the Car has a 1.1mm restrictor pill and is mapped to around 320-330bhp (heading for a safe 340-350bhp in the next few months)

When i bought the VF30 new it already had the T pipe assembled with a 1.2mm pill installed. I believe the VF30 is a JDM STI turbocharger for around the 2001-2002 car.

So it appears the:
2001-2002 STI JDM is 1.2mm pill to run standard
2001-2002 WRX UK is also a 1.2mm pill to run standard
However a 1.1mm is favorable when mapping to get a better response.

This is my finding via my actual events, so others may contradict.

Hope this helps a little.

Rob

No mate you will not require a restrictor pill.....they are only used with non mapped oem ECU's

MY2000, UK. When I had the 2 port boost solenoid replaced with a 3 port boost solenoid, the ecutek 3 map was tweaked by JGM and the restrictor pill was placed in the top hose, i.e from the top of the solenoid to the turbo.
