Default Strange suspension problem

I have a P reg Turbo 2000, it recently failed it's mot on a broken spring and leaking shocker on the back, I thought it would be easier just to replace both the rear struts than mess on replacing spring, shocker etc so i bought a set of standard suspension off ebay, However on fitting the rear struts I cannot get the rear wheels on, they catch on the springs by quite a margin. As my car is running 17" bugeye wheels I though that might be the problem but I hav tried standard 16" alloys and they still catch big style. Am I been really stupid or is there an obvious reason why the wheels wont fit? As far as I know the struts are bog standard (unfortunatly I through the old struts out so I can't compare) I don't want to go down the road of fitting coilovers because I intend to get an mot on the car and then sell it. Any help would be most welcome.

Are you sure you've bought springs for the right car?

Might help if you post pics, and details of part/serial number if there's any stamped on the struts.
